Looking for Midi expert help for a medical device

Hi I am an Electronics Engineer that has written some software to use Midi on a PC as a frequency generator for medical purposes. I am about to post some stupid questions under the special forum DIY where it will be clear that I know nothing about midi despite having written the software and made it work. :confused: Please help me if you can.
 
I'm confused? MIDI is a communications protocol, and doesn't generate sound directly - it just connects together devices that do?

I know this may sound stupid, but what part does MIDI play in software presumably inside the machine? As in a current loop system with 16 channels, and the usual note on/note off, program and cc messages?
