Looking for good $5.00 mic

im going with the speaker from a pawn shop from a handheld radio.
 
I built one for 75 cents using Starbucks Coffee cup and 10 lb. test line. Don't go for those crummy Chinese units that use the cheaper Winchells cups and kite string. They're junk.
 
Ha! I once built one from a tin can and some construction paper. Much more solid than a starbucks cup, and it had more of that "warm," "vintage" sound that you find in mics costing millions of dollars more!

If you shellac the construction paper lightly
it adds body and a warmer tone...

at a local gar(b)age sale. Somebody used
it for karaoke, whatever the hell that is...

Karaoke is a festivity at which people run back and forth in between the crowd, carrying a lowcost mic and screaming non-relevant words, in an attempt to outdo the background music. The woman at the local +40 singles bar find it quite arousing, seems...

that the word "Karaoke" means "tone deaf" in
Japanese. With 40's plus women, maybe the mic
is seen as a semi-phallic symbol...

Starbucks--The corporate whores infiltrating the DIY spirit!!!

For $5 you can buy the "vintage" cup (with adjustable tone/coins) which you local bum has been holding for the last few days. Note, the vomit and malt liquor, spluttered 3 INCH diaphragm at the bottom of the cup. Also, watch out for severe proximity effect, as bums are often quite smelly and mean.

Yeah, there's just nothin' like a large diaphragm... I remember
the first time I saw one. The spermicidal cream really killed the tone, though. Proximity effect warning can apply here too.

I know it's not a mic, but on my last album we played recorded all the guitar solos through a Radio Shack $1.97 telephone amplifier. Sounds like Minutemen, only rawer.
 
I got you all beat. Karaoke mics at the .99 store for a price of......$.99!!! I laughed so hard I had to buy it. I bet the starbucks mic sounded better.

Hey Executivos, could you post some MP3's comparing the $.99 Karaoke mic and the Starbucks mic?

Do you think that the karaoke mic would be worth the extra $.24??

Actually I don't have it anymore. I took it apart to see what was in it. (not much) I think they still have them. I'll splurge the .99 when I'm there again for research.

You got the starbucks mic for .75????? Man I should have shopped around for mine! I got ripped off. Maybe they have price protection.
 
Get the used starbucks cup from the trash, with coffe stains and all for that vintage sound

Shop around? Where else could you get a Starbucks mic, other than Starbucks? :D


Also, does anyone know if they make a tube Starbucks mic?? I'd really like to get one (or maybe a matched pair for stereo) as it'd go great with my tube pop filter and mic stand......

Although, would all those tubes turn my coffee to mud?!? :eek:
