Hi all! I'm looking for a good first mic. Originally, I was going to go with a Shure SM57, but I think I'm leaning towards a solid Oktava MK319 or MC012. I'll be recording acoustic guitar and vocals as well as mic traynor ycv40 tube amp in the future. Please give me any suggestions/offers. My ceiling for the mic will probably be about $100-$120 with shipping included. I came here because some stupid people on ebay keep shoving up the price above what I can get it for at an internet shop ($99.99). However, I'm looking here because I trust the opinions and the gear of people who actually do recordings and know what they're doing. Please PM me or hit up my email at

Thanks again for the help!
:)
PS
suggestions on mic cables, stands, shockmounts, or any other gear pertaining to mics welcome! However, I already own an M-Audio DMP3 and have recording software for my computer.
EDIT: I've also looked at the SP B1 and 603s, but they sound a little too bright (Like a Taylor guitar. I'm looking more for a darker Martin sound), and I heard the B1 wasn't very good with vocals.

Try the microphone forum! An SM57 is right out for acoustic guitar.

No one has an Oktava MK319 they want to get off their hands?

The B-1 isn't my favorite vocal mic, but I'd choose ot over MC012. The MK319 isn't my favorite guitar mic, but I'd choose it over SM57. It's a pretty good vocal mic. I think the B-1 is a good compromise. The problem is- guitar and vocals present slightly different needs, so any mic to do both is a compromise.-Richie

if nobody has a oktava that they want to sell, what does that tell you about oktavas?.................keep looking

by the way, make sure thats a studio projects b1

not brad:

did you ever try a site called esnipe.com?

It lets you automatically "snipe" a bid in the last seconds of an auction, masking your interest in it until its too late. Its free for 14 days to try.
I've won a few things because of it. Try it out!

Haha, good point brad. I was thinking about that myself. Thanks for the tip brich. I think they're is some sort of ceiling price for esnipe's free trial, but I'll check it out anyways.

have you looked into the MXL v67g? It really awesome on some male vocals, and I like it lots on acoustic too...definitely not a "bright" mic...more "dark" like what you're looking for. And it can be found easily for $90-100, brand new.

the v67 was my first mic, mainly b/c i had no idea what i was doing and it came with a free art tube mp preamp at samash. A lot of people don't like it, but at the same rate, a lot do. Will tame some harsh vocals, but seems a bit too boomy for acoustic guitar. If you position it right though, you'll be fine.
