I don't really know what I'm going for these days, but these are my most recent starts for ideas!

Enjoy, and feel free to leave feedback!

First - you need to insert a working link to your webpage or no one will be able to get there (we're basically lazy :p ).

Rough Sketches - nice, flows good, relaxing type of vibe, good for listening. I like the part with the bass that comes in to fill it up. Good start, I'd say it's about a third of a full song length....

Heavy Tryout - again another flowing song which is more (again for me) a listening tune, just to groove to. I think the heavy guitars kind of drown out the whole mix. I'd suggest taking them down, let the other stuff breathe.

The quality on MySpace can be really poor, and I assume you have a nice .wav file of these tunes which is probably more enjoyable.
If you are looking to go commercial shop around for a publisher and try and get these into TV commercials/shows. I think these types of songs would compete well if the bitrate was higher....

Cool, glad you enjoyed listening!

Doing commercials or even soundtrack work has been a more recent interest of mine. I'm a self-taught guitarist and I've taught myself everything I know about music and recording and I'm always looking to learn more. This kind of work seems to flow out of me pretty naturally, but I always feel like my lack of formal training or musical theory might end up limiting me in what I can do (getting stuck in similar progressions/songs flow in the same manner/boring blah blah blah).

I do record everything in .wav format, and for the sake of my hard drive, end up compressing down to mp3s @ 320 Kbps, CD Transparent Audio. I usually just throw whatever I'm working on up on myspace and ask people to chime in with their perceptions of mood or environment of the song so I can end up heading in a particular direction.

What sort of publishers are even interested in this style of music? If you happen to have a starting list, I'd be appreciative!

Thanks!

Andy

...

The very beginning of clear extended made me think of Operation Mindcrime somehow, but that went away after the intro for me.

somethign about try again makes me think of a rush song somehow, but loosely.

I like the heavytryout as a start or something.

this stuff sounds similar in patches to the kind of stuff i liked in the early 80's. Good show.

PS - you were right of course about my last song getting old quick, lol. If you wait a little bit, I am gonna repost it. I did a sort of sax thing bewteen 2 of the 3 melody run thru's, maybe it broke it up some.

I am listning to the rest of heavy tryout now, I like when it gets going again... kind of cool if you turned it into something, I think.

I had never listened to that Operation Mindcrime song until you mentioned it. As far as I was concerned, Queensryche only sang that song "Silent Lucidity" :) Now that I listen to it, yeah, I can definitely see a similarity to that song in the intro of Clear Extended.

Heavy Tryout was me auditioning for a band here in Des Moines that had a big My Bloody Valentine / shoegazing type of sound to them. At the time, I was inspired to create a song in that style. So that was the result of an afternoon of trying to impress other people who ended up thinking I was trying to take over their band. Oh well.... It was a kind of turning point in my "songwriting" skills, since it really helped me put something together that was both melodic, atmospheric, and essentially heavy.

All these clips is more me working on my recording skills and mixing abilities, and that's where that song "Try Again" comes in. I was trying to make these crappy drum samples sound like real drums, and I thought that attempt was pretty successful.

As for the 80s influence, yeah, I grew up in the 80s, so I love all that synthy kind of stuff. Unfortunately, I'm too poor to afford any synth equipment so I just play guitar and that's it. I do challenge myself to make synth like noises with my guitar, but it's more in post production when I can mess with the sounds themselves.

Cool Sound to the "rough sketches" one, liked it.

Thanks! One of my friends is begging me to finish it, so I might just have to now. I'm thinking of going into a 3/4 or 4/4 half time heavy groove part after that spacey higher pitched part to try and develop it some more. I'm guessing it would be a really sweet contrast to bring it all down and then kick it in.
