I am putting together a project called "Surround For Sound" - the idea is to give artists a way to get more exposure with any revenues generated to be split between the artist and charities devoted to hearing research.

Myself and other volunteers will mix and master your music into 5.1 surround...sorry no stereo mixes...

Once you are happy with the results we will make your album available for download in a variety of formats - all revenues will be split with at least 25% going for charity.

We would like to have a number of completed projects available on the site before we go 'live' and issue press releases...

Anyone interested please email at John@Surroundforsound.com

Thanks to the mods for allowing the thread to continue

and I welcome the feedback - what I am doing hasnt been done before, so I understand there will be skepticism

this is one reason I posted here... I am at the point where critical review is required..

my website is under development and more details can be found there...

I cannot post URL's yet - site is surroundforsound dot com

My real name is John Weitner - I live near Toronto Canada..

I am 58 and have been a surround sound fanatic since the quad days in the 70's...I have been doing surround mixing and mastering for about 5 years - but strictly as a hobby using whatever multitracks I could get a hold of..

I have been an entreprenuer in a few businesses for many years, and a year ago I formally retired so that I could pursue 5.1 mixing on a more professional level... I also wanted to 'give back' and get involved in Charitable causes which is how the concept of what I want to do came about - why not combine the two?

I have made many friends in the surround community over the years, and have attracted a few to also volunteer their time in this project...if this starts growing I have others I can call on to help out..

I have no desire to make a single dime from this - all the proceeds (after any PayPal fees) will be split between the Artist and charity - a *minimum* 25% goes to charity - The artist determines the split..

I do hope that at some point we will attract name artists and they will give 100% to charity..

I understand that some will say - there's got to be a catch - well there isnt any... I already have all the gear in my studio to do the mixing/mastering - renting server space for the uploading/downloading is relatively inexpensive..

Other than this I'll have some legal and auditing expenses and that's about it...

thanks sincerely for your feedback..

John

how would you take the tracks John

completely dry? or would you just mix already treated stems into the 5:1

also when you say release an album would it not be better to try compilations?

an album is a lot of work for a home recorder to give to someone else to mix and publicise...especially in a 5:1 format

we will accept them either way - if they are dry then we get to be creative - if they come treated then we will basically just do the 5.1 postioning and assume the artist has them the way he would also like them in surround..

either way is fine - I want to charge $9.95 US for an unkown artist so for this a 40+ minute album should be a minimum...

Have no plans to offer EP's or single songs...

I dont follow your point here...are you saying lots of work for the artist to provide us with his multis?

no just that some of us have been at this for years and still dont have an albums worth of tunes that are acceptable for public release..and if so would this be the format they want them released??

just asking really, 5:1 would interest me as some of my recent tunes would perhaps benefit from it..but keeping in mind we are homerecording hobbyists in general a 40 minute album is a lot of work

I think Id be interested though...I just dont have enough work yet

Ok I see..

I know there are 1000's of bands out there with at least a full album who have no way to get any exposure - they already have stereo versions of their music - these are ones we will target initially..

offering it 5.1 will appeal to a different market - there is so very little 5.1 music released commercially that many would be willing to pay $10 for unknown acts simply because it is in 5.1..

so get going and get your album done..;)

sure...I produce electronic music with some live instruments, Id love to hear a 5:1 mix, I think it would a benefit

good luck with your venture, I lived in Toronto for several years, nice town and a great place for music

To the OP, sorry for causing you problems, but we get a lot of spammers here. Your intentions came across that way. Good luck with your endeavor.

What format does 5.1 come in?? Don't you need a home theatre system to listen to it, like a dvd or blueray player?

It didn't come across as spam to me - I saw the email address and went to the site. .... even still, it remains vague to me. Probably because I am generally clueless across the board.... IE - "what is 5.1 surround?" :-)

I do like the idea of making contributions, and while I never thought much of hearing as a charity, it makes a lot of sense. I have amazing ears - I've always wondered whether I could donate them when I'm done with this life. Sounds funny, but it is true.

Anyway OP - I do not have an album, but I have a buttload of songs.... like 3 or 4 hours worth without any repeats. I need help getting them done properly.... including finding the musicians who will ultimately play all of the parts. I hope to God that I don't have to be the performer in the end, but right now, I'm all I have.

back to work.

Most people into surround will use a DVD/Bluray player...our downloads will be available in these formats:

1- DVD in 5.1 lossy DTS
2- Multichannel Flacs - preferred for those who want to use a PC/Media server
3- Bluray Audio in lossless DTS-MA

Y'know compilations might be a good idea anyway.

Given the choice between a band you've never heard of in a new format you're interested in or a sampler of 5-15 bands you've never heard of which sounds like a better investment?

I'd maybe be interested, but my next album is still a few months of tracking away.

Do you have a terms of service and/or licensing information? Obviously, artists are going to want to release their stuff in a more conventional mp3/CD form simultaneously.

from a buyer perspective, yes there would be nice interest in a compilation - for me to have to deal with 15 bands for one song each is too much work

I have a very simple 2 page agreement that I wrote - I do not want lawyers involved - I am quite flexible in agreeing to what the artist wants..

we have no involvement with the stereo versions - the artist is free to do whatever he wants with his MP3/CD - what we offer won't impact his stereo side of things in any way as we are after a different market - the fans of surround want 5.1 and lossless (24/48 minimum) and have zero interest in stereo MP3 or 16/44 CD's...

So if I already have a CD full of stereo mastered tracks can you use them? Or do we have to go back and send you wave files of every track?
