I will have to agree with Farview here. It is amazing how different the 57's and 58's sound through better preamps while other budget mics also sound better, the difference is not as much.

But to answer your question, for a deep thump, I'd try an SM57 (yes I've broken the top piece but it still works)

Now I want you all to apologise to the Guitar Centre guy you were slagging off earlier in this thread.... :p

57 will allways work on snare, probably never my first choice, but allways works.

i like brighter mics (more snap, less tonk) for snare

C'mon anyone worth his salt has dropped a 57 and broken the $15 grille :D

I'm told it changes the sound a bit...it sure LOOKS uglier. The rest of the mic is bulletproof.

Oh, you can also try those SM57 knockoffs from eBay...GLS mics. Heard good things.

Even more durable is the Sennheiser ones with the rubber e-series mics...I've got a trio of e604's with lots of stick marks on them (and I'm even a good drummer  ).

i put my vote in for the i5, with a little patience on positioning, this mic sounds GREAT on snare. i personally am NOT a fan of the 57 at all.

i have both the i5 and a few 57's. i hate to admit it, but i like the i5 better on snare now...

i said it!... ahh but i do swear by 57's still. either will work great.

some people use MD421's, which you can get for $200 used, but i've never used one on snare, and for twice the money, i don't know if its worth that much more.
