Looking for a recording program

Hi I'm looking for advice on a recording program that's not too resource intensive(lower processor and ram requirements). I currently have a older computer with a pentium 4(2.99ghz), 2gigs of ram, on a Intel Server Board. I've been running Cubase 5 and a Delta 1010lt card and I'll get slight clicks and pops in my recordings. I've tried a few adjustments to the card/program with little results. Now I also use an older simpler program called Cool Edit Pro(Adobe Audition) and my sound is fine. So I would assume Cubase is hogging my computers resources? I'm sure there are tons of other variables here but I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that had similar features( recording and organizing songs with the ruler function organized by tempo and time signature mainly) but used less resources than cubase. Thanks, sorry for the unorganized rant.

I run a similar older underpowered system, but with an external audio interface (Tascam US800 now, before I was using my Mackie ProFX12 USB mixer) with Reaper and not having any problems unless I try to run multiple VSTis at the same time as a few reverb instances. I stem render the VSTis to ease the CPU burden.
