Looking for a new snare.

For sure. They're all in the $300-400 range. It's the shipping that kills me.

I never understood why shipping from US to Canada is considered "international". We can fucking drive there, and almost every major Canadian city is nestled up right on the border anyway. It's not like an item has to fly there or spend weeks on a ship crossing oceans. Fucking dumb politics and shit.

Hey Greg. In all our talk about Supras, I just assumed they're all metal, alloy, etc....

But here's one that's maple. I had no idea. Look at this thing. That's beautiful, man. I'm really tempted by this. I have a fibreglass and a metal snare. But my only wood snare is in pieces and it's shit anyway. I might have to get this:

Ludwig Classic Maple 6.5x14 Supraphonic Snare Drum- Mint Oyster Glass Glitter

It's a toss up between that^^^^^ and this:

Ludwig Supraphonic Aluminium 14x6 5 LM402 B Stock | eBay

Christ, I'm thinking about getting both, but now that's just kookie talk.

That maple one is gorgeous, but I suspect it's not gonna be much different from any other quality maple snare. Maple snares are killer though.

The metal one is a proper Supraphonic. Go with that one.

I don't think they should be calling the maple one a Supraphnic. I think it's just a Classic Maple with Supraphonic hardware, which is actually a good thing. Man, I'm seeing so many options now. I'm getting distracted by too many shiny toys. I just saw a red Mapex Black Panther for $250. They all sound tempting. Can't go wrong with a real Supra, but the Maple snare with Supra snare throw-off sounds good, too. But then, if I'm going to buy a maple snare, the Mapex is $100 cheaper. Fucking confusing at this point. I seriously might end up buying 2 snares....Metal Supra, maple Mapex. How can you go wrong?

I have a 14x6.5 Mapex maple with heavy duty hoops and 30-strand wires. I really like it. Not as much as the Supra, but the maple is the one I drag to band practices all the time. It can be ringy though. It's more sensitive to finding it's just right sweet spot than the Supra. It's a lot more cracky like a rifle than the Supra. It's really good for jamming with a band without a mic on anything.

Fuck yeah! Congrats Rami. :)

Thanx man, and thanx for all the help. I probably would have made the wrong choice based on a cool color or something stupid if you didn't set me straight.

What a difference in price. Here at Steve's Music, which is a huge store with 5 branches across Eastern Canada and usually great prices, they're over $600. But I remember when I worked there. For some reason, there's no Ludwig distributer in Canada, so everything's direct and way more expensive. I think for a while we even stopped carrying anything Ludwig. it was all special order if someone wanted anything Ludwig.

This new-fangeld interweb thing is great!!!!

That's one perk of being an american in a huge city! I can get anything I want locally and pit the retailer against the internet for my benefit. You don't wanna wheel and deal with me? No problem, I'll check it out at your store, and then buy it online from someone else using my phone right in front of you! :D

That's actually the case here, too. The world has shrunk. Ludwig stuff is an exception since, for some reason, nobody distributes it here. Why, I have no idea.

That is odd. There are places that do and don't carry certain brands, but usually the big boys, Gibson, Fender, Tama, Ludwig, can be found pretty much everywhere.

Maybe it's the price, or maybe it's Ludwig's decision for whatever reason.

But I remember, everything was Tama, Pearl and DW mostly when I was in touch with all that stuff.

Lol. There are mom-and-pop shops down here that won't carry Gibsons because Gibson is ruthless on how, when, why, and where a store can stock and display their products. You can't just pick and choose which Gibsons or how many you want to keep in inventory. You have to follow their rules or you get none. Many shop owners say "fuck this" and just choose to not carry any Gibsons. Maybe Ludwig is similar.

Great choice! I have probably a dozen snare drums, most dont see the light of day for months or years.

Supra Black Beauty is my go to snare. Friends that are drummers borrow it from time to time for a live show.

The deal here is that Gibson wants a store to buy at least tens of thousands of €/$ of gear from them to distribute it.
My local store dropped them completely after that. They've got multiple grand pianos in there worth 30k but they told Gibson to go fuck themselves. Interesting decision.
It's a Fender/Ibanez/ESP/LTD store now.

Hey, Greg - I'm after a second snare, too. I fancy a Ludwig Supraphonic myself, but it's a little above my price point! People have told me that the Pearl Ian Paice sig. is a great snare for the money - nearly half of what a Supraphonic would cost. Our band drummer's thrown another iron into the fire, now. He's offered to lend us his Ahead black-on brass 14x6 snare as he doesn't use it at the moment. Do you think this will fit my purposes? Is it in the same ball-park as those other two snares? My kid is using a very good Tama Super Maple snare at the moment, but I was looking for something with a very different character.
