Hi

I used to own a Roland XP-50. I liked the sounds but I hated the interface and the not-so-user-friendly sequencer.

I am thinking of picking up a used roland xp-60 since I hear it has a much eaiser interface.

Can anyone suggest any other keyboards with built in sequencers at that price range (~500.00 US) used or new?

I am a bass player/guitar player who cannot play piano, I just need something that is easy to "step sequence" drums and piano, strings etc.

The main type of music I plan to use it for will be progressive speed metal heavy stuff etc.

I appreciate any help since I do not know anything about keyboards or 64 simultaneious notes and all that stuff.

You could probably get a used Korg N364 (61 keys) at that price. I used an N264 (same but with 76 keys) and, for Speed Metal drums in 1999-2000, and still have an N364 (Bought for $450). I have never redone the songs I wrote with them, even though I have better Samples now. They just sound Good!!! It is not the easiest synth to sequence with, but it gives you a ton of features, and is a breeze to work with once you acclamated to the workflow.
16 Tracks and TONS of AWESOME sounds, to work with.

If you can find a good working Korg M1, you will love it. You can still get sounds to download and the sequencer (which I really don't use) is so easy you won't even have to read a manual to figure it out. You shouldn't have to pay more than $350 USD for one that is in excellent condition.

I totally agree with you about the XP-50 ... although when I was working at GC, Santa Ana, we sold about 2 thousand of them in the first couple of months they can out.

:D Yo Clif:

If you wait a few weeks, you should find many good prices on excellent synths/keyboards/whatever has keys.

After the first of the year, I suspect prices on gear will drop.

I got my Yam Motif 300 pezzutos off the best price from 800 numbers. New, yet.

As the old Capt. & Tennile song goes: "It pays to shop around...."

Wait Wait

Definately wait until after the holiday season to really look for a keyboard. The keyboard companies are having difficulty getting keyboards to sale with the influx of computer based recording and instruments. Prices should drop in the January to March time frame.

All KORGS I've ever used have a user friendly sequencers (My own opinion of course) :) I have a Motif and have a hard time with it, even with the video. I have an old KORG X3 and a newer KORG Karma and they are very similar. If you look hard enough you might even find a KARMA for about $900 US. I know that's not the price range you atre looking for, so I do agree about the KORG N-Series, M-1, or even the older brother the X3.

Cheers,
Ben
