The M-Audio DMP3 is a great clean mic amp that significantly (IMO) beats the preamps in a cheap mixer. That's what I'd get in your price range.

The M-audio Tampa is the way to go. The compressor and out of this world. The pre is nice too.

I agree that the MAudio Tampa is worth a look. Good sounding preamp, variable impedance, and compressor in one box.
