I recently picked up an EV N/D157 vocal mic for cheap and I have had the hardest time finding any info on it. There is absolutely no info on this mic on Electro-Voice's website, google, nor did a search on this site yield any info.

Does anyone on here know anything about this mic?

I'm also looking for a cheap condenser mic to run in stereo with my SM57. So far, I've checked out the Nady SCM900, Cad GXL1200/2200/2400, MXL V63, and MXL 990, but I have no idea which of these is the best in the sub-$100 range. I've scoured local ads and places like harmony central and rig talk for a used mic(something better than the aforementioned choices), but there are no deals at the moment and my budget is strictly no more than $100. I'd be using the condenser for vocals, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar.

What cheap condenser would you guys recommend?

Sub $100...buy used...Ive picked up an AT3035 and an AKG C2000b and Ill guarantee those perform way better than any of those listed.

Ive had the N/D 357 and it wasnt a bad cardiod mike.

With a budget of $100. I would go for the MXL V67g I found it on shopping.com between $67. to $88. compared to GC price of $119. so they matched the price.
I've had it a few weeks now to record vocals and guitar and it's a big wow factor for the price, so much that I'm getting an other one.
Later I'm to have it modified and you can find that info here on HR as well as the positive input about this mic.

The one MXL that Ive heard nothing but good about...I still dont know how it would stack up to an AT3035.

We have booth in the studio now and my associate and I booth agree that the V67g is a go to mic above the 3035 and others in the same class. Now that was only on a few sessions I'm hoping that the trend continues.
Vocals sounded great and on acoustic guitar between 12th fret and sound hole was the only mic used and wow.!

Thanks for the response so far.

Which MXL, the 990 or the v63?

What are the differences between the v67 and v63. How would the v63 or v67 stack up against the cad gxl2400 in the hands of a beginner?

The v67 is looking like a bit of a pipe dream at this point. It's not something I can get locally, or online(including shipping) for $100. Canada gets raped hard when it comes to gear availability

The v67...all other MXL mics Ive heard were trash...cept the 603s...from what Ive heard I woudnt put it with the AT either...but it depends on what you are using it for.

I would still try to get the MXL V67g. How hard do you get hit on a $80. purchase?

$5-10 on conversion, $20-40 on shipping, and customs(which in my experiences has been about $15 for items under $400)

If worst comes to worst, would you guys seriously not recommend any of the mics in the OP?

The GXL2400 is the only mic on the list that I can get locally and for a decent price. It is the front runner as of now, but all the feedback on it is so mixed that it doesn't help.

If you guys were to compare it to the V67, how would it fare for a basic electric guitar recording?

Frankly it would be useful to know what is availible to the OP and why they absolutely have to buy new...why they cant just buy off Ebay...there isnt much we have to deal with in the US...we dont even pay sales tax online here

What is available are whatever is at online retailers willing to ship to Canada. If you read the op you would have noticed that I said am willing to buy used(my SM57 was used), but there is nothing for sale locally, or on h-c and rig-talk.

Locally, most mics are overpriced, and selection is very limited at places like Long and Mcquade and Axe music. On the other hand, spending an additional $50 on a mic that retails for $80-120 USD doesn't seen worth it unless it is mind-blowingly good.

I should have been more clear in the OP.

I am looking for feedback on the mics listed in the op, any suggestions you have for cheap condensers, and feedback on how good your suggested mic is in relation to other mics.

Right now the GXL2400 and V67 are the two mics on my list, but I still know nothing about the mics and it's not something I can try before I buy.

It would seem easy to ship from here to canada...do they like open everything up and connect a tax to it?
Here we even will put a minimum amount on our used cars Bills of Sale so the buyer can save on taxes...how do they know how much you are spending when you deal with an individual?

Studio Projects?

I am very pleased with the SP B1.. I have tried a lot of budget mics and this is by far the best I only paid £77 so imagine it will be about $130.. Very nice on everything I've tried and low noise.. Haven't tried the MXL V67g mic but it does look nice has 20db noise though whilst the B1 is 12db I think..
Just me two pence...

Thank you. I will definitely check out the B1. How does it do for recording electric guitar?

To be honest (and this just may be me) I think a good large diaphragm condenser should be nice on pretty much any thing accept really loud highly transient stuff like snare drums and kick drums..
I did in fact try it on a guitar amp but it was a reverb mic placed quite far away so not really a great test but it sounded good at doing its job..
I would really recommend it and I've researched and tried a LOT of mics in this budget area.. As I said before its probably my best mic and its not my most expensive either. Got two after trying out the SE 2200 which I really didn't like and I felt paled in comparison to the B1, they were slightly more expensive too..

I do think Darrin has a good point though if you can buy better second hand go for it! I personally like to buy new but I know one day I'll need at least one more "pro" mic..

Well all I can say is I would not purchase nady or cad if that helps

You like the B1...the C1 is the animal...Id recomend that to a friend...did you look into the CS1 deal that is going on right now?...they should be the very best China has to offer.

I saw an Amy Winhouse video with her singing into an sE2200...Ill try to find it...its the only time I recall seeing a signed artist using one.

cool yeah I would like the C1 but I have my eye on the T.bone SC 800 made by Folio China who build all the SE stuff.. Same mic much cheaper.. SC 800 is designed by ex Neumann employees apparently.. meant to be as good as they get.. Gonna get one and if its bullshit I'll just send back...

P.S
Sorry can't stand to see Amy wine house for even a second... And I wasn't impressed with that mic at all.. There are two different versions though..
