Slowing becoming un-noob.
And I mean Cheap.
I need something to dink around on, and record. It doesn't have to sound that fantastic, if at all. I can work with shitty sounding drums.

Price Range..
PREFERABLE would be under 100. But I doubt that will ever happen.
So under 200. Still a little unreasonable, but more doable.

Anyone know of anything? Yeah, I'm willing to go used, if I wasn't, then this would be ridiculous.

Let me know if you guys know of anything.

Yes, I know this is definitely a weird request. And definitely a ridiculous price range. But I thought I might as well try.

Thanks again guys.

I honestly, honestly wouldn't bother. Get yourself a practice set for £100-ish (not sure of the conversion atm), obviously less used. In your price range you'll be stupendously lucky to get anything that sounds better than rubber.

As for recording, I don't really understand why you want to record drums that sound like arse? Why not just MIDI out your ideas and save up your pennies?

Just my opinions...

I would save up, but it would just be EXTREMELY nice to have a drumset over this coming summer. The drums that usually are used are going to be an hour away and it's a pain in the ass for our drummer to have to bring in his drums every time we practice. So I just need something that will make enough noise. I figure I can replace the heads, making it sound decent enough, and yeah.

So there you go.
Yeah, chances are, if I can, I'll get a $300 set or something. But we'll see what happens.

Local used, wouldn't even bother with the online auction sites. Too much competition for an actual damn good $100 deal.

If you have a site devoted to local musicians, that's the place to find them. The crappiest place on earth has cincymusic.com for example.

I use a CB 5 Piece Kit that i bought new for $350 canadian...It is a Cheap Kit but is surpriseingly sturdy and durable...It sounds pretty bad with the cheapo skins that come with them but once you put a Proper set of skins on it and give them a good tuneing they sound pretty good...

The Hardware that comes with the Kit is awefull and most should be replaced (Kick pedal and Cymbols and Hi-Hat) ...I just bought a cheapo $100 double Kick pedal and a set of used B-8 cymbols and it works pretty good ,considering the price.....

I have had mine for about 4 years and not an thing on the kit it"s self has broken (accept I keep breaking the pedals and springs on my cheapo Double kick pedals) and I play them REALLY HARD (I break about 3 sets of Sticks per practice)....

I"m sure you could find a simular Kit used for under $200....

Cheers

I'll second that. I put new Remo skins on all the drums and a Powerstroke on the snare and they sound very good indeed. Unfortunately the included cymbals are (obviously) beyond awful, not suitable for anything.

Well if you're willing to spend a bit more then yes, kits in that range can sound good with some TLC. I recommend going for the budget line of big companies for sure; DW make PCP and Mapex make CB Drums etc. etc.

Haven't read this whole thread, but pretty much the most bottom of the line sets (Enforcers, CBs, some of the cheaper Pacifics, etc.) start at $300 brand new, and you'd be even lucky to get one used. If you want to get bottom of the line from the major manufacterors, then they start at around $400 at the bare minimum, and go up from there. You might be able to get one of those sets used for a decent price.

$100? Forget it.

$200? You need to be very lucky to find a good used deal, and the set would probably not be in good shape at all, seeing as how cheap sets are cheap for a reason ;)

$300 is where I would start from. Get a brand new bottom of the pile set or a used low-end from a name brand.

There is a small "gig set" sold by Sam Ash that I believe is sold under the name of "Groove Percussion" (I could be wrong on the name). Anyway it is a 4 pc kit with all thicker maple shells (it has presence). The kick is small (only 16" I believe) but the sound is there. It's definitely NOT a kid's set but a small gig set and it has the sound and presence to use for recording. It is more than you wanted to spend (regular price $350 and on sale you can get it for $100 less) but it is definitely worth a look. I like it better than the Gretch Catalina set which isn't all THAT bad, but this one sounds a whole lot better to my ears.

Just check your local craigslist until you find somebody selling a pile like this used.

Note the snare is WOOD, but none of the other drums are of a specific material :D
I have an old Slingerland snare made with some sort of compressed paper.

Exactly. Of course, for about $100 more, you're looking at Ludwig Accents, Sonor 505s, PDP what-have-yous, etc. You know, almost actual drums.

Save up some money, get some Pearl Exports or Yamaha Rydeens gently used. They go for around $300-$600. As far as cymbals, Sabian B8 Pro's aren't bad, neither are Zildjian ZHT. I got some '60's Avedis Zildjians for $5, but you'll never get that lucky.

Don't dick around with cheaply made crap. Get a decent kit with good bearing edges and hardware, slap coated ambassadors top and bottom, hazy on the snare bottom, a moongel on larger toms, and you're good to go.

I have a ludwig accent kit(shell pack) that i got for $200 about a year ago for this same reason. You'd maybe get your drummer to carry his cymbals over or just get brandnew ones. I would definetly recomend this for you man. The kit would sound fine for practice even with the stock evans heads. Look on musiciansfriend or something...it should still be available.

Places like Craigslist and your local classifieds usually have some great deals. I found an old 1967 5 piece Ludwig kit for $200, that would typically sell for $1800 at a Guitar Center store.

The deals are out there, just gotta be proactive and patient. Happy hunting, Rez

Fuck Yeah.

I just talked to my buddy and apparently he has a full set that he'll sell me for like 65/70 bucks. Fuckin' fantastic.
