Look At My Diagram Of Future Studio

This is a diagram of what I would like to put together and call a home studio.

I hope to record guitar, bass and vocals with some added keyboard textures. I'm a novice when it comes to midi ... but I'd like the ability to incorporate it should I decide to.

I bought the G4 already (use it for my design biz) and I recently got the guitar and amp. About to pull the trigger on the keyboard.

I would love feedback on my desired set-up. I'm sure there are less expensive options ... but I would rather pay more for simplicity. Do I have everything connecting right? Am I somewhat on the right track?

Your connections are looking good. However id recommend spending a lil more on the monitors. Those so called "truths" wouldnt be my first pick, especially with the money your laying out.

THAT IS A PRETTY COOL SETUP, I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH THAT KEYBOARD IS, BUT I BET FOR ABOUT THE SAME PRICE YOU CAN GET A NICE CONTROLLER, MORE EXPANDABLE AND VERSITLE SOUND MODULE, WITH MAYBE A CARD, OR SOME MONEY LEFT TO SAVE FOR A TOTALLY DIFFERENT SOUND MODULE TO MAKE USE OF THAT NIFTY SECOND MIDI OUT ON THE DIGI 002. JUST A THOUGHT.

I was going to get a controller and a motif rack but I couldn't find a controller that has the feel of the S90. I absolutely love this keyboard ... and I like the simplicity of having a self-contained unit.

Any suggestions for a different pair of monitors? I'm trying to stay in the $400 range.

I know what the next purchase you're going to make is. A new keyboard. It looks like your caps lock key is still stuck.
 
Just curious, Layer7, have you tried a Studiologic SL-880? The hammer weighted action is made by FATAR, (which I understand makes the same for many other "name" brands). I really like the feel, and it's only $550 if you go to the right place...retail is much higher :). It's just a controller, though, so you have to have either MIDI computer interface or module.
Just an idea,

Yea ... I've looked into the Fatars ... still think I want to keep it simple and go the S90 route.

I'm most concerned with getting feedback on whether or not the 002 is a good choice. I've been told that if I'm most concerned w/ tracking guitar & vocals then Pro Tools is the best way to go.

I'm trying to keep things simple ... and the 002 seems like a self contained unit ... 4 mic pre's, motorized fader control, comes with Pro Tools. Sounds good to me.

The obvious concern seems to be being limited to Digi hardware. But is this such a bad thing? They make quality products and will always be an industry leader.

Can anyone talk me out of this?
 
I've got the 001, and the most I can say is that people who have it will defend it to the grave, and people that don't think its a waste of money. Take from that what you will...
 
You should check if the midi features of protools are sufficient for your needs. Many home musicians/composers seem to favour cubase or logic because of their extensive midi sequencing features. You should download demo versions of all three products and try using them on your mac before buying any soundcards or the digidesign 002.

Protools is great if you ever plan on working in a pro studio since its an industry standard.

But can't Pro Tools do most Midi sequencing?

I would think as time goes on, PT will become more Midi and OSX friendly. Don't you think?

My plan is to wait till the 002 comes out bundled with an OSX-friendly version of Pro Tools.

I went ahead and purchased the Yamaha S90 and a pair of Event TR8 monitors.

Oh ... and now I'm broke.

I wonder if i could find this locally... In Canada that is. I don't play keyboard but i'd like to learn, but the idea of having to pay 1600-2000 dollars for a keyboard with decent action that i can actually practice on is not inviting.
