look ahead time?

quick one I think: what is the "look ahead time" setting you see on some compressors?

From what I understand (and I could be wrong) that setting allows the compressor to 'sneak' ahead of the signal (by putting a delay on the output) to nab any trouble spots that might slip under the radar if the compressor is not set to react quickly enough... adjusting the ms adjusts the amount of delay...
