Long time, first time.....

For my first post, sorry I don't have something better to put up
I don't have anything completed on my DAW yet as I work very slowly!

This is an old John Hiatt song that I recorded on my Tascam 488. It's only got 4 outputs, so I had to do a partial mixdown as it was transferring to the computer. Because of the way some tracks had to be bounced, they were already submixed on the master tape. As such, there are some things I can't really change on this mix. I used 1 output for all left channel instruments, 1 for R. ch. instruments, 1 for L. ch. vocals, and 1 for R. ch. vocals.

Please give it a spin, and take some shots. I'll make any changes I can without retracking.

If you had written it I would give you an A+ on format and structure.

Seems to me the whole thing could be louder so it can breathe a little. Tones sound pretty good on most of it to me but I`d try to hunt that piano with a fine parametric and try to back it down since you cant retrack it. or get to it in the mix. The guitars and vocals might come out a little better too. I think you did a good job of gettin all tracked. The mix is just a little too soft for me.

Hey man...IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! LOL.

Your daughter's vocal talent makes sense. You can sing. I'm listening on headphones, which usually makes vocals sound lower, but I can make out every word.

Man, I suck at EQ tweaking, but if there's a way you can slice some of that ride out of the mix, I think it'd be a good thing. With all those triplets played so perfectly, it gives it a real mechanical vibe that I don't think you're going for. Something narrow around 10K on the right side might do the trick, if you want.

I started noticing some distortion on the vocal in the second verse (I know, I know, you can't fix it...I'm just making sure you know that I paid attention, LOL. You've always been pretty generous with YOUR time on my 50 tune posts a week habit ). Anyway, it's there some during the first verse too, but not as bad. I'm not hearing it on the pre-chorus or in the chorus.

Bottom line - Pretty darn nice as is...LOL. I have a lot of respect for people who can track like you do. I started with a Tascam 4 Track, and I never got past the whole "THE PAN KNOB SERVES 2 FUNCTIONS" deal. I finally realized I'm just too linear for "real" recording...LOL. Gimme' a computer with 128 tracks (and pan buttons that do NOTHING other than pan) or give me a new hobby.

Nice work, man. Your voice is too good for that drum machine.

downloading presently. before i listen, just want to say that your daughter's song has made it to my main mp3 folder under debussy with some pretty impressive company. most of the rest is piano but i'll be listening to that for a while.

ok, it's playing now (I LOVE DSL..). oh, this is about your daughter . good song. your singing gets better as the song progresses. especially during the chorus. you're very strong on the top harmony.

i'll admit i haven't heard this before so that's why i'm commenting. i usually stay away from covers.

i'm not going to talk about drums, cause i can't get a good drum sound myself. and that is depressing my lately.

whoever is singing in Debussy has a beautiful voice as is the piano. This is not exactly my type of music, but I certainly appreciate it big time! Pro quality both in performance and recording. A+
only complaint: intro and ending needs to be edited out.

I think its a little too strong playing a support part. It seems to stay kinda continuous throughout the piece. If it were up at that level in the choruses and bridge and ease back more during the verses it would be a little more dynamic. Remember, this is just my opinion. I really like the whole piece though, very much

Hey, Twist. Welcome to the "lay your ego on the line" club. I can't believe for all your participation in the clinic that this is just your first post. (BTW, I assume "Rest of the Dream" is what we're talking about here. The references to DeBussey confused me )

First of all, the overall quality is pretty good. However, I thought the hh's were a little dominant in parts. Also, I kinda agree with Toki about the piano. However, I don't know that it's too loud. I think the problem may be is that it's too constant. There doesn't seem to be any volume variation. I suspect it's midi and needs some velocity changes plugged in. If it's not midi, then the consistency is pretty amazing.

Vocals are good. Harmony is good. Drums are programmed well.

Fine job. Let's hear some more stuff from you.

the melody is exactly like You shook me all night long by AC/DC..

good harmonies.. I don't like the drums.. the cymbals and piano seem to be too upfront, and there were a few timing mistakes on the piano.. I thought I heard some clipping on the vocals.. your singing is the best thing about this tune.. I would definitely remix it.. maybe add something to those parts that are just piano and bass (mainly the first verse).. sounds good otherwise.. nice guitar additives..

The DeBussey is a piece from my daughters' Junior recital. I just put it up for something a little different, and I was feeling a little proud of her!

Sounds pretty good the ride cymbal in there got a little annoying to me. I think I would like to hear more guitar and less piano. Good song. Too bad you didn't write it (an me too for that matter ). Your voice is good. It seems to be missing something in here. I don't think it's your voice I think it's in the mix. Maybe some compression, maybe some verb? Others could probably be more specific. Or it could be my puter speakers .

Alway's liked this song. Voice sounds great.. maybe needs a little more "beef" to it if that makes any sense. But i'm just an old butcher so dont pay any mind to me . Drums sound little thin maybe. Loved the harmonies...spot on. Great to hear a tune from ya man! Thanks..
