Lol how do i record?

I have an SM57 which i connect to an XLR to 1/4 cable and then i use a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter to connect it to my computer. But when i do, there is a huge delay and also there is extremely bad quality, if i can even hear the sound in the first place. Someone told me i need a pre-amp. Do i? Thanks.
 
well first of all. thats way to many converters in the line.

second you might want to start on google by looking up basics to recording.

you're going to need an audio interface, mic, cord, a solid computer. theres a ton of stuff that goes into this.

Then read everything else you can.
Basically, you need an audio interface of some kind - this converts the analog signal to a digital signal. The built-in soundcard on your computer can do this, but not well.
 
I expect you have an impedence mismatch, hence the need for an audio interface that James21 mentions. I use a Sapphire 6 USB. There are many out there so look around before deciding. The principle being that it can take low impedence mics, like yours, high impedence mics and instruments and outpiut these via USB or Firewire to your computer.

Still using a built-in soundcard?? Unfortunately, those are made with less than $1 worth of chips for beeps, boops
and light gaming (not to mention cheapness for the manufacturer) and NOT quality music production.
The poor hardware and software drivers will lead to high latency; delays in processing the audio.
Even a cheap $50 recording card with real ASIO drivers will be much better.
#1 Rule of Recording: You MUST replace the built-in soundcard.
