Hi guys - we are in Charters Towers in northern queensland in the middle of mac burger beef country. Have had a great trip up the coast with good camping sites and nice friendly people. Today we head further north to the gulf country. Had a few concerns regarding crocodiles but we haven't come across any yet. Nice hot weather and the Van is performing like a dream. Have done some heavy 4WD stuff and it was excellent. Comfortable to sleep in as well.

No worries John, the sharks ate most of the crocks there, the ones left were dispatched by snakes
 
Made it to the top!

Yup - we've finally made it to Darwin - hey Dobro - I can see you from here....Had a great trip through the top end on dirt roads all the way and camping next to huge rivers systems. To give you an idea we were camping 25 feet above a river that is currently about 50yards wide.There was a tree where we camped with debris another 15 feet above us. In the wet sesion this place gets 2 yards of rain per year!!

We've seen roos, dingos, brolgas, jabirus, and lots of eagle hawks. Not as much wildlife as I was expecting but locals say it's because it's the dry season.

Visited a couple of Aboriginal settlements that were pretty uncool- tooo much booze but we went to a booze free one the other day and it was really cool,clean and operating really well.

Diesel costs are really high - we pay $1.10- $1.40 PER LITRE (multiply by 4.5 to get per gallon!!)

Well I finally found out what Dundee in Croc Dundee means. The other night we camped at Dundee Beach which is on the west coast south of Darwin. Beautiful beach but NO SWIMMING cos of Crocs, Sharks and Stiggers. Stiggers are jellyfish with lethal tenticles. You can see the crocs offshore so definitely no swimming. We are now back in Katherine and have completed 6,500Ks (60miles is approx = to 100Ks.)

Really liked Darwin, it's a new city as the original was totally destroyed by Cyclone Tracey in 1974. 60 people killed and 1000 injured. Of the towns 35,000 inhabitants 30,000 had to be evacuated. The new city is really nice with wide streets and lottsa parks and gardens. Stayed in a cabin in a caravan park and had real showers for a change.

Off to the Kimberly now on the west coast. Hope to see lottsa pretty gorges and rivers etc. we are taking the 4WD dirt road to avoid the crowds that are developing at all the tourist sites.

Thanks for that Ola - well we made it to the Kimberley - this is the most amazing place we've seen so far. It's like Thelma and Louise country except that it's covered with grass and gum trees. It's the burning season. Oz bush needs to be burnt and it has to be done at exactly the right time or you will destroy the existing trees. Most of the burning is still done by the aborigines who have a 12 season year as opposed to ours which is just a wet and a dry season. A month later the grass has restored to green and the trees have dropped thir burnt leaves and replacing them with new ones. So I'm often covered in soot and probably look as black as Mr Q :)

The road trains keep on coming - these are Prime movers with up to four 20 wheel trailers carrying produce, fuel but mainly cattle in two storey trailers. They are taking the cattle to Wyndam where they are loaded onto ships in lots of 2000 to be sent live to Indonesia or the middle east. We watched 500 of them escape from the yards the other night and we were all cheering for the cattle.:)

Made it to Broome - the Byron Bay of the west coast. It's a really nice town and it's nice to have clear blue water without crocs and to see the sun set into the ocean. We spent quite a few days in the Kimberly - fresh running water and swimming holes without crocs and hot and dry - but the traffic is increasing as the north holiday season starts.
If you want to do it you can hire 4WD vans etc. The standard outfit here is a Toyota 4WD Landcruiser Ute (Pickup to you) with a 12' aluminium boat on top and a caravan behind. also there are Toyota landcruiser wagons and troop carriers. They are all mad fishermen. The scenery is fantastic still and we now have to figure out where to go next.

silly thing is I've hardly been playing guitar lately..i better start practising to justify $pending the money:D:D:D

Yep, looks like SAE have taken the "Online University" offline, including all John's tutorials.

Maybe there are figuring out how they can make a dollar out of every one who wants to source information there.

But maybe I'm just a cynical bastard..............

Well we've been across the topend and have just spent the last week camping a few yards from the high tide mark at a beach with white sand and azure blue water - stunning.
It a fishermans playground but neither of us are fishermen.

We crossed the Pentecost river in the Kimberly and a bloke on the opposite side took a photo of us as we were crossing. He has just emailed me the picture so I've attached it. Hope this gives you an idea of the kind of place we are in.
