Locking Tuners

We could use a little help settling an issue. What is the proper way to re-string a Start with locking tuners?

I broke an A string last week durring a jam. I have never broken a string of that gauge. My friend says it was because of when I locked down the tuner. So, do you lock down the string before or after tuning to pitch?

Thanks.

With locking tuners, before. With a locking nut, after.

Light,

Thanks, obviously I did not check my spelling of "Strat" and "during", but I appreciate your prompt answer. You have been very helpful on this BBS and I have learned alot from you.

Thanks.

Before. If you lock them after it will change the pitch slightly.

Sperzels definitely break strings. Try not locking them down any tighter than necessary.

For Sperzels, you slip the string through the hole in the post, pull it tight by hand, and tighten the lock snug. If you overtighten, you'll cut the string, but this is hard to do. Then twist to pitch.

The lock is not keep the post from turning, it's to hold the string in the post. Unlocking it will unleash the string.

The idea is that the less string you have around the post, the less potential there is for slippage and losing tuning.

Took me a while to figger that one out. I should have read the manual!

OK...this is different...

I thought you should still put three or four wraps around the post, then lock, then tighten to pitch.

Nope. That slippage is especially problematic when using a whammy. Floyd mitigates this with a locking nut. Sperzel attacks the problem at the peg.

Ummm......yeah.......I did that once in a guitar store before I understood how they work. The salesman was telling me the specs as he handed it to me and he mentioned that it had locking tuners. I thought that was pretty cool, so before I tuned up the first string I made sure to loosen up that lock :(

I've actually never had any problems breaking strings on my Sperzels, and I never really paid any attention to how hard I was locking down the strings. Go figure.

Ah, no. No wraps with locking tuners.

That would completely defeat the purpose.

And for those who appreciate my posts, your welcome. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam from time to time.
