?????????? LIVE SNARE & KICK ??????????

I just read a subject where the guy wanted to know how to record LIVE drums with the snare & kick on seperate tracks without any bleed.
Is this just a neat trick with pan,
or impossible as I thought.I GOTTA KNOW...!
If anyone does know PLEASE reply.

Simple
Close mic the drums. Use a gate or expander.

O.K. What is the gate or Expander going to do.
I mean how does it work.I think I know what a gate does but how does it work in this application.

Ever thing thats below a set threshold is turned down or off.

Patch the drum through a gate, adjust the attack time to a fast setting, adjust the range control so everthing below the threshold will be turned off, then adjust the threshold so the gate only opens when the drum is hit and it's done.
