dear forumers

being new to the forum and to pro audio world, would first like
to send my deep apologies in case am writing something stupid!!

my problem is this:

have recently bought a used Sony TCD-D100 portable dat recorder +
Sony ECMMS907 Digital Microphone.

would like to start recording some sitar + tabla (percussion), hand drumming and traditional chanting concerts

what should i take into consideration to get the most professional results (except for moving around with the mic and finding the best position to place it)?

- is such recorder good enough?
- are there better pro recorders? (am not just talking about price - HHB, TASCAM and SONY too have pro models - but about results)
- should i consider getting a better mic? even if my DAT player has a small jack input?
- have quickly read about pre-amp (is it for mics??), mixers and other tools.... do i need them? even with my portable dat?

looking forward to receive a lot of helpful tips from all pro-audioers.

apologies again and many thanks in advance,
Mefistofele

Yo Mef:

One can ALWAYS upgrade gear -- new gear keeps appearing and that keeps the wheel turning.

Only one way to find out the main thrust of your question: start recording. Watch your meter or meters that indicate input to your unit -- Maybe record something of short duration and play it back and evaluate.

Since you are using just the "basics," you might need some reverb later.

I'm guessing you are recording with just one mic. Things like clapping hands will be picked up but you will be able to focus only on one flute or whatever unless you move back and hope the combined music coming out will combine nicely going in.

Give it a shot and see what happens.

with the ecm-ms907 youre recording one the front pointing mic to the left and the side mics to the right i believem youll need to decode this with software to make it listenable...or you need a mid side decoder, if you use software you would keep the center mic on one channel and the side mic on another, then make a copy of it, so you have 2 side tracks and one center one, then you invery the phase of one of the side tracks, its confusing at first, but its something you gotta do with mid-side mics, which can be very usfull for doing interesting things with the stereo image...

if youre mic'ing a concert, you will need to get your mic as close to the middle of the room as possible, orbetteryet on stage if you know the people...

for doing field recording like you are there i have a creative nomad 3 20gig player recorder, with and optical input, which is supplied from a denecke AD-20 analog to digital convertor preeamp, and i am upgrading my mics as we speak looking for something like a rode nt-4 or a audio technica at-825

hope something i said helped :)

blah blah blah!
