I went to see a band over the weekend called 'The Inflatable Sideshow', and the lead singer had this weird effects unit attached to his waist, with his vocals obviously running through it. They put on a very enjoyable and energetic show, their music is pretty varied but is mostly dub\ska\reggae\trippy funk kind of influenced.

Anyway he was pulling off some awesome sound out of this thing...huge filter sweeps, really cool delay's and echos, etc. But every variable seemed to be easily changed in real time to suit the changes in the song very quickly. I don't mean he had presets saved either, he seemed to increase\decrease things like feedback, effected frequency etc. by twisting knobs on this gadget.

I want one !

Anybody heard of anything like this specifically made for handheld use by singers in a live situation ?

Yo Butterfly in Irl:

Seems to me that someone off-stage is doing the "magic" with the mic. A singer, it seems to me, would be too involved with the tune to be pressing buttons but it is possible.

Off-stage folks do lights, sounds, etc., and maybe the "vocal" gimmick?

I'm just suggesting as I don't really know. But, Bruce or somebody here would know.

Absolutly, unequivically NOT ! :)

He was doing little random 'whoops' and fractiond of a secong long 'Jah..' vocals...and proceed to put a big sweeping phaser or something IMMEDIATLY on it, and control it.

Too random, too spontaneous, effect kicked in too soon after the noise (like straight away) plus he was twisting knobs and making facial expressions :o that coincided with the crazyass effects.

I agree that a singer is normally too involved in the vocal performance to be able to control this sort of carry on but that was what impressed me about this guy.(Although the vocals WERE simple enough).

Somebody please tell me I'm not going menthol...and that this guy is not sad enough to pretend he is controlling these cool effects.

Please....?

Live voal effects done in "What We Know"

Well, if this throws anything into the mix:

The singer from the band What We Know in the song "Where Thieves Feed" is a great example of a lead singer doing his own effects on stage:
