Hi All: I just posted 3 songs, all available for free download, from our BBQ bash Sunday. It was the first time we played together in 2 1/2 months. It was recorded in my backyard with my core sounds mic and sharp MD-7 minidisc, in front of about 60 people. This was the first time I used this mic in the band setting. I placed the mic about 2-3 feet from the PA speaker, on the guitar amp side. We played quiet as usual. You can hear little kids in front talking. I used the filter switch on the battery box of the mic. It cuts bass. I am happy with the vocals coming out on top, but the bottom on the drums is too far back. Maybe the filter switch cut it down. The vocals seem much cleaner to me than on the Alpine Hall session. Maybe it is just in my head. The core sounds Binaural microphone doesn't break up, like the Reactive Technologies stereo spider mic. What do you think? Is this mic better? Thanks Walter

What a great live vibe these songs have...

I like the recordings just as they are, even if the drums were a bit distant.

These recordings are full of character, pure gems! I truly enjoyed.

For a live outdoor recording, I was very impressed with the quality you got out the recording setup!

We used to record all our live shows and a good chunk of the practises but we never had anything approaching the quality you guys achieved here.

I liked the music as well. Good basic, blues with a well played harmonica and good vocals. The drums did sound a bit distant in the mix compared to the harmonica but, I wouldn't loose sleep over it at all.

Nice job! :)

nice harp man! :D
Good vocals too......I like the spontaneity of it.

Lt. Bob: Thanks for listening!

Ghost of FM: I bet they didn't have mini discs and these mics, when you were recording your band. This thing is so simple to use it is basically a no brainer.

jcrts: Thanks. I will continue to mess with mic placement. I love this field recording approach. You only have a few variables: level on the md, instruments volumes, mic placement, and location acoustics.

Really cool that you can do this off the cuff and create it right there...
Talkin' bout "Oreoes" :D You'd have fit in well at our last jamfest...

Good vibes

I record my band a lot and I use the same approach because of the ease. If you have to carry too much crap with you then a lot of nights you won't record.
I use a DAT-Walkman and I sometimes use a stereo mic but I've been having much better results using two seperate mics. That way I can put one on each side of the stage. Makes it much easier to pick up everything...... if, for example, the bass is too loud.......then at mixdown I can turn that side down a bit......it gives me just enough extra control so that I can fix the minor problems that inevitably crop up and it still sounds about as live as using the single stereo mic. It's also not much more trouble.

Lt. Bob: I am ignorant to DAT technology. How can you fix levels on mixdown? Does it have 2 tracks? What is your exact set-up?
I would love to hear about this and some samples too. Walter
