live drums in home studio 4xl?

Does anyone record live drums in home studio 4xl or any sonar applictaion for that matter that would like to give me a little advice on how to edit.? I got 2 overheads, a shure 57 on the snare, a condenser on the kick, and a dynamic on the hi-hat. I'm happy with how they sound on sonar untouched but I feel like I could be happier. Does anyone have any personal advice on how they like their drums to sound before I start fiddling on my own. Compression, equalizer, limiting, etc and in what order? They are just your average rock drums if that matters.

I would do this -

- Gate the snare and the kick to get rid of other crap
- EQ anything really crap that needs fixing
- Compress the snare and kick to taste and for the feel of the song
- Set up a short reverb and a long reverb and use little bits of them for depth and colour on the snare and the kick
- Bring up the overheads and hats, perform any corrective EQ etc -- maybe taming top-end cymbal sizzle?
- EQ the snare and then the kick for fit now the overheads are back in.

Fiddle with it.

From there, I would also normally take the bass, kick and snare and compress the crap out of them, make them pump and breathe in time to the music, (or try to), and then blend a little bit back under the mix for fullness and glue. (That is after I have already EQ'ed a hole in the bass to fit some of the kick's 'WOOOMPH'......)

Or do something else totally different that sounds good and works for the song.
