Instead of asking many questions that have been addressed before, I have one. What is a good book for learning the basic techniques of home recording with a PC? Something not too technical but pratical for a newbie like myself. Maybe a Home Recording for Dummies or something like that.

The best book I know of for learning the art of recording and mastering is right here: BBS!!!

There are many chapters to find and read and execute.

Oh, you can buy many other books; however, the BBS gives you the real thing from many fine artists and engineers.
