any one do these? is it worth it? anyone interested in "partnering" to do a listening party? [obviously, it would have to be someone close to VA . . north carolina, dc . . . hint hint . . .lol

for real, any advice? horror stories? words of wisdom? feel free . . .

You will need to give some more information in terms of your listening party.

What level of demopgraphic are you trying to reach?
-Are you trying to reach your base consumer market?
-Are you trying to reach the DJ's and producers that'll be playing your artists music?
-Or are you trying to reach the "who's who" in th emusic industry (Program Directors, Music Directors, Label Nationals and Regionals, Mixshoew Programmers, etc...).

After answering that question, let me know what's your budget for the "greet -n- meet".

:wow: a anohter Spin sighting on the forum :D

let to talk to my brother-in-law and ask him how his listening party for him wifes album went ( http://www.walkntall.com ) a few years back..it was here in DC/MD somewhere

I think it could be a good thing....BUT....don't run into it half assed or you're not going to get its potential worth from it.

Spin (what up mayne) asks very good questions. You HAVE to treat this like a business plan.

Ask yourself this...what do you hope to achieve from the listening party?
-word of mouth album sales?
-marketing from live venue events?
-distribution or record deal?
-possible business partners or a street team?

etc. etc. etc. I could go on about this for days.

Answering those types of questions is going to help you plan out how you want your listening party to be.

As for selling CDs, I say screw the out the trunk bit. It's been overdone to death. Now you have the internet and you can make connections and use your friends as your own personal street team. Just tell them that if they can get 10 people to buy your album, you'll let them have a free one (or maybe let them on a verse on your next album if they're rappers too or whatever).

People LOVE the word FREE so much that they don't realize that it's not actually free because they're earning that shit for you.

The basic idea is promotions. Getting the word out that the new cd is "available" in stores and online. Trying to reach base consumer market - teens - young adults who buy rap music and otherwise dwell in the hip hop community. DJ's and Radio folk wold be good, but the budget is shoestring at best - maybe thhis could be done at a later date. I'm hoping to find a few freebie venues around my city and partner with anyone who wants a shot at "telling folk" they got a cd for sale . . .

-word of mouth album sales
-marketing from live venue events

Here's my advice to you G.

I would seek out a street team. Get word going in your area. Get people who vibe with you and support what you do (people who are active in the community).

Once you've done that, get your street team to hustle overtime where you are, but make it fun for them. Send them out with a promo of the CD and let them play it to folks that they know.

If you can hit up strip clubs and small clubs and try to get promo there. A listening party is only good if folks show up in this case...and most people aren't going to show up for a CD unless it's a PARTY (like food and live music is involved...usually fairly costly to do).

i FEEL U FIEV - im workin on the street team and even sponsors to offset the cost of the food n drinks . .. i really think im good there - what i wanted to know if is there any one close enough to VA that would want to also be "featured" at the listening party . .. im hopin to get at least one other artist - that way - we both can bring in a certain number of potential fans . .
