Sounding pretty good man....Maybe bring the guitars up just a little. I don't think it would hurt. Bass seems to sit prety good.

Nice sounding song man.

Gerry,
I've been waiting for you to post another gem.
The harmonies are different this time around. Good, but different.
Only concerns I'd have are the cymbal at the intro & the level of the hi hat throughout.
With the former it sounds at bit odd - sample? The latter is a bit too loud but not crisp.
I think the guitar levels are good & they sound different, playing variations on the strum. Well done.
I really like the bass - has some top to give it definition and plenty of bottom. No probs with the bass drum & bass either - they have their space.
Downloaded & on my portable player already.
Thanks.

Ido, I always love your songs. They all come from the heart and sound very real. I like the feel of this song. It's like a Neil Young tune but with someone who could sing. I like the guitar arrangement in this. Keeps it interesting throughout. Good stuff, my friend.

Hey Gerry,

I too always love your tunes. I particulary pay close attention to the lyrical content in your songs, they always have well thought out phrases and actually mean something. Your Mum must be proud of you, especially having a tune such as this dedicated to her..and your Mrs must be proud also because of the inspiration she provides you with. :)
Drawing from real life experiences seems to work great for you Gerry!!!
Your vocals are great, the drums are a little buried, not much just ever so slight.
I would love to hear a little guitar solo or middle 8th with some nice melodic lines which I know you are greatly capable of doing... :)

Another great tune Gerry!

Gorty.. :)

Very good, but I figgered it would be :D

You have excellent structures to your songs, nice and compact and efficient. Nothing really to nit here, I am not crazy about the drum sound, but since I say that every time you knew that :D I would just bring up the snare and have a lil more punch on it.

Very cool Gerry, always a pleasure hearing your tunes. You have quite a collection of em now. This is a really good song.

Thanks for listening Dogman....

I was listening to this on the way home tonight and wondered myself if the guitars were to low on the verses/chorus. They seemed to be ok on when they are by themselves, sans vocals. Remix note there.....

Bass is good? Glad to hear - I find this bass is a challenge for me to mix using monitors now.

Hey rayc - Thank you sir!

Those cymbals are "midi file" drums that I write in Cakewalk. The cymbals choices are limited and sometimes sound good and other times...well. The high hat is also meh....What I wouldn't give for a drum kit and some talent lol :D .

That's my excellent friend Mike on the bass - Rickenbacher 4002 Stereo, with mids/highs scooped and bass jacked up (4X10 Cabinet). Tough one to mix as I said but if it sounds good to a bass afficianado such as yourself, then I guess I'm doing ok.....

Hey Neil can sing...lol :D

Thanks Rami....

This one was easy to write because it did come from the heart and personal experience. Those kind seem to write themselves sometimes.

Glad you like the guitar arrangement. I wrote it after the melody - although that is not unusual for me. Kinda like you writing your drums after you've gotten the rest down (that is interesting to many of us).

Thanks!

Its a very nice tune, laid back, guitars, vocal and bass sound great. The drums are a bit in the background but it gives it a vintage vibe, I suppose drums are so in your face now you expect them to jump out at you.

The Rick bass is a perfect choice, nice bottom end and very full sound.

Hey Gorty - thanks for the kind words....

My mum is getting on and I was able to vist her this year 3000 miles away and play her this song. I was glad I could actually tell her she was part of the inspiration for this song. She is very creative herself. It was one of those "special" moments that I will always remember/treasure.

The Mrs. is the inspiration for all my "love songs" and a few "others" (i.e. Overtime heh heh). I'm lucky to have her......

I'm a bit lacking in leads in my songs - especially the slower ones. I'm recording a newer tune now that sounds a lot like "I Do" (hey I'm allowed to copy :D ) and I'm adding a full on lead backup throughout that I will mix in and out accordingly. I have a limit on tracks so comping is a bit of work.

I killed the drums - that 's why they are buried..... :D :D :D :D

Thanks Gorty - hey just thinking - when will we hear some of those new Les Pauls in the MP3 Clinic? I'm jealous (a lot) ;) ;) ;) ;) :D

DavidK - glad you like this one too! Yeah the drums are meh like I said above. I really need to sit down with a friend of mine and record some quality drum tracks as a foundation.

We played a month ago three piece "live" in the basement, but we were rushed and tried to do too much too quickly so it was so-so. We really need to get the drummer home and off the pipeline road for a few weeks to do it properly.

Thanks for the compliment on the song structure - that's the direction I'm working on so it sounds like it's going ok....

BTW - Looking forward to your CD release. How come so long, or is that the norm 12 weeks? Like your cool myspace page - dig the new album art. But then again he had some good inspiration. How did the Pops Show go?

Hi Gerry,

I just listened to your new song.

I love the words, that tell the story of your love. They are so special.

The vocals are sitting very good in the mix...sounds like my PC Monitor is singing to me!!(the way I have my monitors sitting) Right down the middle! The harmonies are coming at me from both sides. Sounds like you are in the room with me.

I am not listening on PC speakers, but my monitors.

Vocals are very crisp and easy to understand. The harmonies are excellent.

I have listened to the song at least 10xs....I lost track...well lets put it this way, I have been listening for around 35-40 minutes.

At first I thought maybe some more ump on the snare, but the more I listened, the more right it sounds, the way it is. Your vocals telling a story, are the focus of this song. If anything, I would put a tad bit more volume on the kickbass....more full rich bottom end to go with those crisp vocals and guitars. It just seems it would fit well with the great bass you have there!!

The guitars are great!! This is a really good mix Gerry. :) :) :) :) :) :)

Kudos!!!

Hey Anfontan - thanks for taking the time to listen....and glad you like it....

Yeah, I tend to put my drums in the background a bit - my bass playing friend Mike and I are polar opposites in that department :D he likes them more in your face.

He's played that Ricky forever, he actually has considered a Precision and has a Jazz (had a Pre) but never uses them. Guess you go with what you like and what you know sounds good! :D

Thanks Again!

Hey True - thought it was about time for something different ( ;) )
That's a positive note when you can listen to it several times (without getting too tired of it). Also good to know it sounds alright on your monitors - the mix you describe is how I mixed it on mine, so it's translating ok so far (Vocal down the middle and b/g on the sides).

Kick drums scare me :( but I will look at that along with the other notes above....

I just put the lyrics up on Soundclick.....

Thanks True - appreciate you taking (so much) time to listen.

:D :) :D :) :D

I thought the drums were a bit buried; I'd bring them up. I like how the bass sits, like the above poster said. Everything is clear and pleasing to my ears, so good job and keep up the inspired songs.

Hey Gerry,

I'm glad your Mother got to hear this song, you also must have a great Mrs to inspire your songs because you have churned out some beauties.

I'm working on a tune that will showcase those Les Pauls as we speak.. :) :)

Gerry,

This is a cool tune. I always enjoy listening to your songs 'coz they have substance. :) The story is cool. The singing is cool. The playing is cool. The bass is cool.

The drums.... well turn up the kick a little and the snare a little. Maybe a touch more reverb on all hats and cymbals. I know they're placeholders, but that's no reason to not try to make them a little more closer to the current pop-rock sound. :)

Hey thanks for posting them lyrics. :) I'm still also enjoying listening to "You've got what it takes".

I like the guitars where they're at. :)

Hey ido

Nice songwriting. Cool tune that works really well.

You always have a very "smooth" style (vox and guitars). That certainly works. But sometimes I'd love both of these to be "roughed up a bit" :D

Maybe you could go out on the turps or something and then try another version of this. Or maybe just sneer a few times while you're singing. You never know...

(I know you're a pro so can take suggestions like this without being offended :) ) I think if you went for this "roughing" your great songs could find an even bigger market.

cheers music man
