Well, so maybe it's not so much an order as a request. I haven't been around here much to give feedback, so I understand if you skip right over this one, but this mix has been through about 23 versions in the past 2 days, and I'd love some fresh opinions from people who haven't heard any of the crap it's been through, lol.

My daughter (Jaimee) and I wrote this a couple of weeks ago.

"It Only Hurts."

(special thanks to Village Idiot for the bass, and another guy for the piano, lol). :D

THANKS IF YOU BOTHER,
Chris

Just one question: is she really that perfect, or did you auto-tune the voice? (I hear what might be AT artifacts, but maybe you just used a crappy MP3 encoder.)

Auto-tuned or not, she's extremely talented. The song is great, too! Definitely going into the "keeper" file.

Well I believe it sounds pretty damn impressive...

lol...well, technically..."no," I didn't "autotune" her. However, I did try to straighten out a couple of flatties with the old Antares. :D (her mom made her go to bed before we were done tracking, and I'm just about the most impatient person on the planet when it comes to mixing, heheeeee). Now, there's about a pound and a half of it on my backups, lol...but that's another story.

Hey, thanks for listening and commenting, Don.

Same goes for you Final Soldier. I appreciate it.

Sounds fuckin awesome. To be nitpicky the acoustic in the prechoruses seems a little too hot or percussive. You might try bringing it down a touch or compressing it a bit more to smooth it out. The arrangement is very nice but it doesn't quite gel like it could.

I would add some percussion starting in the first chorus, probably a shaker to give it a little movement. I would probably also extend that lower note on the violin in the outro. It seems to stop a bit abruptly.

It's a killer tune and the vocals and arrangement are great.

Nice!!!

Very very VERY good song. Your daughter has a
beautiful voice. The recording is of exellent quality too.
Good job!!
.

Great tune..... I've enjoyed listening to it a few times already. It's in my fav's. I really like the lyric's. A couple of places the vocals sounded a little weak. Like I had to listen real close, to what was being said. Thanks for the listen as always......

The compression you have on her voice sounds awesome. Or is that natural? Im guessing its compression because i can hear some noise artifacts with it like it was compressed alot. But either way, it sounds really cool like that. Her voice is really good. How old is she?

She turned 14 last Friday. Thanks for the comments. I actually didn't use a lot of compression on her vocal - I'm gettin lazy and just using a C4 preset on most of my vocals these days, lol....I had to envelope the crap out of it though. I also boosted it in the 5K region and dipped some mids out of it b/c I have the harshest mic on the planet. Again, thanks for the comments.

Flash - thanks bud. Yeah, I guess I'm at the point where I just know the song a little too well to HEAR it anymore. Her main problem is with annunciation right now...mostly b/c she has a mouth full of braces, lol. Anyway, thanks a lot for checking it out.

branded - Well damn, lol...all I can do is say "thanks."

The Seifer - thanks man (or woman, lol). I appreciate your making it through it.

Tex - Eat me.

adoc - Much appreciated. I'm about deaf to this song now, so your comment helps.

She sounds great very talented, just sounds EXACTLY like some female vocalist that's out now, that might hurt ya.

Pat

Chris,

I really like this!

Of course, I've been liking Jaimee's vocals ever since you sent me, "Be Careful"...which always makes it back on to my hard HD after new OS installs.:D

She rocks!

lol...it was a joke, Travis. You know I love you. :D. You made me work on the guitars is all, lol. I did, btw. I actually took most of one of them out. I think it helps, but my dumbass used the one with the latency drag on it, lol. BTW - I just bought a PA for Jaimee and me, lol. It's gonna' be a fun 4 years before college. :D

pdlstl - thanks a lot man.

Pahtcub - Thanks. If you don't mind, who does she sound like?

Chris,
I really love this tune.
I heard the different incarnations.
Some times I want to hear soft brush drums come in instead of stick drums, It gives a more intimate sound. But the drums are so soft in the mix it still works well.

Man I really wish I could record people like you and J even once a year.

Please tell me how you record Jamiee's vocal icluding the mic-pre-any compression (EQ?) etc.

Sounds great!

Tom

Chris,

Great song, great voice.
I remember some older recordings of her and she had a good voice then.
Buy now she has her own voice, her own sound.

Well done.

Okay, lol...but I gotta' tell you, the stuff I do on the back end is only b/c of the horrible mic I use on the front end, so beware.

The chain on this was:

AKG C3000 (bad start here) ; to
DMP3 preamp; to
Soundcard.

I usually run it through the Waves C4 preset for "pop vocal," which does give it a little more top end. I roll all the lows off below about 150Hz.

Then, b/c it's such a harsh freaking mic, I run track EQ on it centered at about 2.5K, drop it 5db about an octave around that center point. (Q = 1.3)...and I bump the highs narrowly about 3db @ 12K to give it a bit of "air."

The best thing on that vocal track is probably the verb. It's from a plug called "Roomverb M2."

Other than that, I still have to envelope it b/c she's not great about mic control yet.

Thanks for asking, TMIX.

Joe Recorder - I appreciate it very much. Be good. :D

I have to listen to it in Lo-fi.. but jesus. I wish I could sing like that when I was 14.

I'm loving the song. Once I get a faster connection.. I do believe I'll check out alot more from you.

Damn, that's good! That's a great song, the vocals are beautiful, and the sound is excellent. Your daughter's got an amazing voice - Watch out, Norah Jones! Wonder when I'll be hearing it on my local soft rock/easy listening radio station...

Anyway, I agree with what TexRoadKill was saying about a couple of things. I also noticed that violin note at the end dropping off too quick. I really liked how the drums felt in with that last chorus, although I felt like they were too muted. Obviously, they need to be tame for this kind of tune, but I would have liked them a bit more present. I think Tex's idea about a little light percussion like a shaker in the earlier choruses is a really good one. I also liked tmix's idea about some brush drums. Maybe build up the percussion so that the listener is really begging for those drums in the last chorus. Or, just don't touch a thing!! :D Cuz it's freakin' sweet as is!!

Thanks a lot for sharing that one! Instant favorite! :)
