OK.
I need to dispell a myth here.
The "Michael Jones" with 9 + albums/CD's is not me.
We have similar tastes in music and similar styles in playing, but I'm not the Michael Jones with 9 CD's.

I think the guy stole my name because he knows of my political ramblings and musing in the cave.

:D

It's me. Thank you for saying that, it's probably the biggest compliment I've ever received, even if unintended.
I always find it funny how my voice has similar qualities to his, especially since he has a southern accent when he speaks, and I'm Canadian

Maybe you should join a Ben Folds cover band... :p

Is that how you normally sound, or were you doing a Ben Folds impression?

Anyway, thanks for the mp3... I've been listening to it heaps! The vocals are also really nicely recorded... what was your signal chain? I say this because my voice has a similar register and tonality to yours (OK, it's just a touch more bassy, but it's reasonably close, though I'm an Aussie and can't really match the accent :) ).

Will definitely follow up on that Ben Folds album now!

Heheh, I'm glad you like it! Thanks for the comments! I think this is a one-time deal, though; I'd much rather write my own stuff.

That's just how I sound. I can't help it! I swear I never even started sounding like him on purpose.
Here's proof, me singing one of my own songs: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=144700

Check out the above thread for my signal chain (used the exact same one on that song). I really can't recommend the mic I'm using though. I've never heard it sound good on anyone else, including my brother, who is basically just a slightly-deeper-sounding version of me.

Definitely buy "Rockin the Suburbs." I think it's great. There are four or five other songs on there that just blow me away every time I hear them, and, well... Ben's version of the one I covered here is better, more lazy and beautiful sounding :) Plus he has the vocalist from Cake do the duet with him.

Yeah I didn't realize this thread came back to life till now - anyways, again, the MXL V67 really does a great job. After doing more recording, it is the truth.

As for the bottom end many were talking about, I looked at the manual for the V67 and saw there is quite a dip in the frequency response at around 150 Hz, which might attribute to some of the missing low end. I don't know if it would make sense to add any EQ on the front end when recording. But anyways, most songs we are currently working on will be in a full mix - they are in process - they will also most likely be available on the net for free once they are complete. I will post up more as we progress more.

Also, with the more piano-exposed pieces, we may consider using the Steinway grande piano in the room right next door to get the less bright sound, so we will see how it goes.

And one more thing, for those who thought Lucas was showing off too much, you haven't heard much yet ;). More is to come.

And bleyrad, I'll def. give your piece a listen when I get back - I'm bout to go grab some grub real quick. I'd like to hear what you have up there.

All to the glory of God fam!
Craig

I would not change anything on that recording. It is perfect. Changing anything would simply change the sound, not improve it in any way .IMHO

Hey bleyrad, you def. sound like Ben Folds - I just started playing it when my roommate walked in the room and he def. was like "this isn't Ben Folds is it?!" like he never heard that version before or somethin. Yeah, that was def. a good mockup bro, and the piano def. sounded nice behind that joint too.

Anyways, I'm glad you are doin your own stuff, instead of bein a Ben Folds copy in everyway, as good as he may be. I listened to your original joint, and the mix was excellent and the song was real nice. Keep doin your stuff bro!

Peace,
Craig

What software are you trying to play it back with? The file is a 24-bit 88.2 KHz wav file, so the software should be able to play that higher bit and sample rate. Let me know what you are using and hopefully we can have you listen to it.

Just using windows media player 10.
Yep! WMP any version will not play 24bit at 88.2. You need an audio tool like audacity, Sonar4, Homestudio, Digistudio, Audtion 1.5, whatever you want.

That's right - you can download a demo for Cakewalk Sonar (what I use to record) from http://www.cakewalk.com/download/download.asp?Action=DL&PID=CWSR401 and you can import the wav file in that program. If you have another program, like any Dracon suggested, that supports that sample and bitrate, you can load it there also.

I got my monitors yesterday

OK.

I know the bleyrad username is just a cover name for the real Ben Folds. I know it, it's not some guy who sounds like him. It's him. :D :D

I listened to the piano on my Event Project Studio 6 Monitors. Yeah! I know I wanted to get the HR624. I wasn't willing to wait until I got a $1,000 to start mixing. So, for $300 I got a used of the old version of the TR6. I listened to the Ben Folds song, and the piano Medely. I could hear a little harshness on the left side on the piano at the beggining of the medely but then it stopped.
I'm not sure if it was due to the mic being too close or what. I listened to the WAV file as well. When I turned it up too high I can hear the harshness, again on the left only. I'm not sure if its my monitors or what. I'll have to test them with something else to see.

what's the signal chain for your piano? it sounds great, but that thread says nothing about piano.

The piano is MIDI triggered from a keyboard, running out Steinberg's "The Grand" VSTi.

Part II - this time I need help for something else

What's going on?
I have been doing other recordings - and now I get these crazy pops, clicks, and buzz's. Please help me figure out where these are coming from - I need to save this recording somehow and prevent it happening to the other ones.

Here is the link to the new piano track:

Here is a link to another thread describing the problem in more detail:

Really cool track, reminds me of they might be giants as much as ben folds I'd love to hear more. Get a CD together I'll buy a copy. :)

Put me down for a CD as well!

The clicks sound like a buffer problem to me, but that's just a guess.
