Listen to Effects Without Recording on 414 MKII

I got a 414 MKII for Christmas (whoo hoo!) and am having lots of fun while I learn.

Lets say I have already recorded drums and guitar on tracks 1 and 2. I want to put vocals on track 3 but I don't want to record any effects just yet. I'll save that for the final mix so I can try different things. However, I would like to hear a bit of reverb during the take. Is there any way to hear effects while monitoring the other two tracks?

Yo Chardin:

You should be able to listen to the effects if you are overdubbing. I used to have a Tascam 488 and I could listen to effects, especially useful when doing the vocal.

Also, my MD8 which is still plugged in, can do the same thing.

Also, my Yam 2816 can do the same thing.

You should be able to "record" with effects if you want but most add the effects during mixdown.

Check your manual. When you are overdubbing, just turn on the effects and you should hear them in your headset but you won't be recording them unless you push different buttons.

Why Does This Work?

I've been experimenting with my 414.

1. Plugged a SM-57 mic into the left XLR jack in the back.
2. Ran a cable from the Effect 1 Send to a multi-effects unit.
3. Ran a mono signal from the multi-effects box to the 5/6 stereo input.
4. Set track one input select switch to 1.
5. L-R and Tape Cue monitor buttons were down. Effect 1 button was up.
6. During recording I could hear the effects and the dry vocal signal was saved to tape. Exactly what I wanted.

When I changed the input select switch to L the effects were also recorded. Could be useful for certain things.

I'm glad I figured how to do this. Can someone explain why it works this way? I'm sure this is one of the most misunderstood areas of the 414. Thanks for your help.
