He's a mastering engineer - so having heard hundreds of major releases he's in an excellent position to judge the production values of songs, as well as their sound quality.

???

I don't understand your rationale for a distinction....

A mastering engineer isn't going to be judging things from the same perspective. It's like asking an auto toucher & re-finisher to give you a list of the most reliable automobiles. The opinion of an actual auto mechanic will tend to be of more value -- or at least of a different kind of value. :D

In your analogy, the mastering engineer would be more like a test driver -- he's tested hundreds of cars and has the experience of knowing the differences between them....

The ME has the same type of perspective for production values!

Yes, but still from a different perspective. I'm confident he could tell you what happens upon impact going a certain velocity, but I'd be surprized if he could tell you how long the car should last or how it will handle under normal driving conditions over time, and why. :D

It's just different perspectives, BB.

To use a similar analogy, you can't tell me a film critic has the same perspective as a casual movie-goer, or that the editor has a similar perspective as the director or the producer or the lighting guy. :D

Did you actually look at the link I gave you? Or simply dismissed it because it's an ME's list?!?!?

Pretty good list, there, Gabriel.

No good reference list would be complete without OK Computer.
