Newbie question on this interface...

Can this be hooked up directly to computer or do I need some other kind of equipment?

Basically, I was looking for a easy setup for recording female vocals. Nothing professional, but just something with decent quality and I was recommended to use a SM58 and Line6 UX2 with my computer. Any thoughts?

Yes...it is actually nessesary to hook it to your computer to get it to work...it does all the prossessing for the specific sound using the included software.

Yep. Plugs into your computer via USB 2.0 cable, and you can monitor the sound via two balanced or unbalanced 1/4" phono jacks (can run it into a mixer, etc).

From the computer, you open an application called umm.. GearBox? might be something newer now, and from there you can change with pre-amp emulation you want, reverb, etc...., or if you are using a guitar plugged into it, you can choose with amp, microphone type, distortion pedals, delays, blah blah ...

Not a bad setup for someone starting out.

Ok, so I almost have everything I need except the Line6 POD UX2. Budget might not allow for it. So my question is what other interface would you recommend?

They do have an UX1 that only has one input...no phantom power...but thats ok since you are using an SM58.

Man, I feel like such an idiot (NEWBIE I guess is what yall call it). The more I read, the more I am getting confused.

Because I may need to record vocals and the keyboard at the same time, I was told USB interface will not work or be the best bet and to get a firewire interface instead.

If I go that route, what do I need? I am getting a new computer so I can make sure it has the firewire port, but after that, is there something specific I need?

You have to have alot more inputs to see any difference...heck Tascam has a 16 channel interface that is USB2...at 1-2 inputs you shouldnt have to worry about that.

Ok, so please tell me, and then I'll leave everybody alone! Exactly what do I need? In terms of i/o, midi, pre-amps, etc.

I am going to be using a PC, 1 Dynamic mic to record female vocals, and then the keyboard. I want to record them together at the same time.

There you go, give me both options if you can (USB and Firewire) in terms of how many i/o, midi's, pre-amps, etc.

Thanks a lot

Everything you will need is:
Line 6 UX2
SM58 Mic
Keyboard
Computer running Gearbox and some form of recording software

Connect it like this:
SM58 to the UX2 via XLR cable
Keyboard connected to the UX2 via mono 1/4 audio jack (guitar cable)
UX2 connected to your computer

done - you can now record!

The ux2 will give you reverbs, delays, compression etc for vocals and keyboard

Hope this helps!
