Line ins on Interfaces.

Hey guys. I was casting my eye on the Tascam US 144 L. It says you can track four inputs at once...but two of them are line inputs. Now forgive my ignorance, but doesn't a line input require a pre-amp to hook up, say a mic, to it? Otherwise what instruments can be hooked up via line levels?

Line ins do not require preamps. Condenser mics require preamps because their initial signal is too low so it has to be boosted to line level for recording.

The usual use for 2 line inputs is to patch in the left and right outs of a mixing board.

As far as inputs go you can get as fancy or stay as modest as your budget allows.

Hmmm....okay. Can you patch instruments in there too? like a guitar put through a POD or some such?

My Inspire also has two line inputs. An electronic keyboard (audio) works well into those inputs. And, I have often converted vinyl albums using those inputs.

a guitar if you convert it to Lo-Z first. Most likely those line inputs will take Lo-Z...and a guitar is Hi-Z. There is an impedance mismatch and you signal won't sound as good running it in direct. If it POD says it outputs line level signal...then go for it. Or use something like a DI Box.

keyboards, CD players, mixers, the output of a mic preamp, vinyl record player IF it's the line outs (not phono), etc....anything that is just a typical line level signal is made to be plugged in there.
