Limiter - Help!

Hey all,

I need to bring the volume of my mix up, so im looking into getting a limiter. Anyone have any ones that they would recommend around the 200 euro mark?.
Im looking for one that will last, aint cheep kinda thing.

If you can find one in good shape for around 200e, i'd suggest the ART VLA-Pro (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_id/60536). I used it when doing some tracking a couple months ago. Going from the basic preamp in a MOTU 828mkII (simple, but good and clean) into the VLA-Pro, then back in through my interface made a HUGE difference in the recordings with my acoustic 12-string. The closest analogy i can think of is that it put a magnifying glass over the tracks. Brought things cleaner, and a bit more in focus. It didn't do anything to warm the sound, or add other 'friendly' characteristics like that, but it did make a big difference.

As budget gear goes, ART makes pretty solid pieces.

Alternatively, you could try the art TCS-II. It's cheap and cheerful, and would probably sound as such, but you might be able to make it do something good for you.
 
That's not a lot to work with. If you plan on using a hardware limiter on final mixes, then you're going to need something that doesn't suck.

I'd be looking at something like a used Aphex Dominator. They're fairly common on ebay, and you should be able to score one in the $300 range, no problem. And they rock.

You really would be better off with a software limiter. If you are using it to make your mixes louder, you need a mastering limiter. These are thousands of dollars

I agree about using a plugin limiter in this case. Have you tried using whatever limiter plugin came with Sonar 4? You also might try the Waves L1, L2, or L3 limiters. Take a look at T-Rex also.

if i get myself an urei 1176,
then i could run my (DAW) mixes trough that,
but would i need expensive ADDA converters then?

or wont it hurt to just hook it to my main Motu outputs,
....i'm not really into digital-analog conversion, no expert in that...

I don't believe an 1176 is intended for mastering. These are not transparent limiters, they are really good on bass guitars, vocals and stuff like that. Anyway, an 1176 is a mono unit.
 
Waves L2 is fantastic, especially if preceded by a subtle use of their Linear multiband comp.

A good VST freebie is the Blockfish comp/limiter by digital fishphones.
