Lightpipe to Firewire interface?

Does anyone know if there is an simple interface that just provides one lightpipe in via firewire so that I can add my DAW inputs to my computer recording setup?

I'm confused. What are your DAW inputs? Lightpipe is typicaly ADAT optical cable. Firewire is a hardwired cable (I forget the IEEE no.). Do you want something that can convert an optical output signal into a Firewire signal?

So you have lightpipe out from your DAW and you want a firewire device that just pipes that lightpipe input into the computer, right?

Provide details on your gear and it may be easier to help you out. I'm not familiar with any converter box that will take an ADAT signal in and spit out a Firewire output. There are several boxes that will change ADAT optical to S/PDIF coaxial cable.

Yes

What I would like to do (and it sounds as if this might not be possible) is take the lightpipe out of my DAW (Roland VS840) and direct it straight to the firewire port on my laptop. I use Pro Tools 6.7 LE and an MBOX but there isn't a ADAT input on the mbox. I noticed that some of the more pricey recording interfaces have an ADAT input so you can add the inputs of your ADAT (or DAW) to what you already have. I hoped that since these units take ADAT to firewire through the interface that there might be a simple unit that is just ADAT/lightpipe - Firewire that you could set up with whatever program you were using....

Sounds like there isn't such a unit..... Is there something I'm missing on why this can't be done?

Not really...I guess there just hasn't really been a demand for something like this.

Too bad, seems like someone could make one for pretty cheap which would give anyone a quick way to add their ADAT inputs to their comp recording system.

Oh well, perhaps in the future...

Thanks for the info...

There are firewire interfaces that have ADAT ins and outs...typically along with a bevy of other analog and digital IO. The MAudio Firewire 1814 for one. The TASCAM 1804 is another. Unfortunately, there aren't any cheaper methods...

There are plenty of PCI cards that are ADAT only from guys like steinberg, EWS Terratec, M-audio...even RME has a great low cost (400 dollar) PCI card that does 3x ADAT IO. But on the laptop front, us ADAT users are much less lucky...

Imagine...a laptop, a 2x ADAT interface, and 2 racks worth of good quality preamps with ADAT outs. A perfect portable studio...and not a single manufacturer makes an ADAT only interface for laptops...

The Mbox has a S/PDIF input. Get an ADAT to S/PDIF converter and your good to go.

Yeah but SPDIF is still only 2 inputs and I can't use the SPDIF at the same time as the two inputs on the mbox so I'm still left with only 2 total. The SPDIF has been helpful in transferring my songs I had recorded on my DAW though..... 2 tracks at a time.

Thanks though...

Why not just stay ADAT? It have no real advantage over firewire. Adats being doing what firewire does for years.

I'm not sure what you're suggestion is?????

Way too pricey and I already have my PCMCIA slot taken up for my firewire adapter that I need for my external hard drive. Thanks for the suggestion though... I guess for now I'll have to stick with what I've got.
