does anyone know how to lift vocal tracks from a song that is in mp3 or wave format? what software? can this be done with propellerhead's reason software? i think protools can do it, but i don't have protools. any feedback is appreciated.

The only way you can do it is, try to EQ out everything but the vocals....depnding on the voice it's probably around the 1K range...problem is there are alot of instruments that operate in that same range. You're never gonna be able to isolate just the vocals.

A quick and dirty method is to invert one channel and sum it with the other channel. This will make anything in the center of the mix disappear (more or less). Usually the lead vocal is in the center. Unfortunately, so are the bass and the kick drum. To avoid losing those, you can put the inverted channel through a high pass filter before summing it with the normal channel.

There are karaoke plugins designed to do all of this automatically. Don't expect miracles, though.

I think Madji wants the vocals kept is that right? Not sure if that is possible with phase cancelation or is it?

yes, i have a song in mp3 format with really nice lead and background vocals, but the music is straight whack! the singer wants her vocals (lead and background) lifted from the music and saved as an acapella in mp3 or wav or whatever format. i want to know how i can get that done for her. the music is very simple, just a whack bass line and very simple drum programming. that's pretty much it.

Oh. That's different. I thought by "lift" you meant "remove". :o

Through the use of phasing you can "sort of" do what you are after. It will always sound like crap though. You really just need to get the original multitrack files if they are out there somewhere.

yep, ain't gonna happen...especially if you want it just acapella.
