"Liberty" remix

Howdy ya'll. About a year ago I did a song on here and the main problem was that the drum (Djembe) was too boomy, and basically is a bi!ch to record.

Anyway I have edited them a bit and cut them up by hand to get them more in time (our drummer was having an off day and also worked on the boominess of them. Some may not like how much I cut them, but please let me know if this is descent now. Once again I would appreciate any comments for improvement and likes so I can further improve the craft. Thanks.

Nice strings... Lots, but not too much...

Vocals still bugging me... Trapped in the center while surrounded by instruments... Maybe a split or distant chorus?

Personally I thought the drums in this one sounded much better than in the first one of yours I listened to (In Memory Of).

You have real talent as a songwriter. Nice stuff. The strings are great (makes me cringe thinking about some of the synth strings I've used). I like your vocalist as well (you?). All in all an enjoyable listen.

Thank you very much. i agree with the vocal seeming small in the middle. The guitar wasn't quite so big when i first did it but after a few fiddles it ended up becoming almost too full. The vocals on this compared to in memory of are kind oposite on the two scales. This one is almost too thin, high, and small, and the other is a little dark, and large. One of these days I will get it right

Violins = did you mess with them? I swear, I remember an intonation problem that's not there anymore.

Djembe = tamed, but still big on the full system.

guits still sound great.

Hey, I love this song. Not sure if you're aware, but some guy started a thread a while back looking for the best vocalists on the forum and Waytf listed you and one other guy. That's how I came across this song. Anyway, I'm just getting started with the home recording thing and would like to go for a similar sound. Could you tell me how you recorded it. what mics, guitar especially. thanks.

very nice. smooth, and with a lot of depth. You could maybe bring out the vox a little with a gentle touch of upper mids and not have to change the level. very nice guy...

Hey there sorry for the delayed response I have been out for a bit.

Chris: I never touched the strings so I am not sure what the problem was. I remember you mentioning that before but I never heard it. My ear probably isn't that golden though so who knows By the way thanks for the background vox. You are talented my friend. It was cool because it wasn't just like a single vocal track it was multiple harmonies.

Thanks for the comments I appreciate it. Wow I didn't realize I was nominated for the vocals thing. That is a big compliment for me, I never really considered myslef a singer until I was forced to sing two years ago because our singer dogged out right before a tryout. I am just getting confident with my voice so those comments mean a lot to me. As far the recording of this track you can probably get more details from my old post when i posted the first mix last year. But from what i remember I used the MXL 603 on the guitar going through a Soundtracs Topaz or my old Edirol soundcard (I can't remember) placed at the 12th fret pointing away from the hole. then I doubled the whole part and panned hard left and right. I use a Guild JF-55 jumbo which is somewhat difficult to record at times due to a lot of mids but when you get it right it does a good job. Vox were done with a C-1 through the Soundtracs. Djembe was miced with a crappy bass drum mic and then congas were miced with a 57 or two, and then I spent hours trying to manually align those because my drummer was having an "off" day All the strings were done with the MXL 603 and Cello had the C-1 on it also mixed together with the 603. This is one of my first recordings. I will have some newer stuff soon with better equipment that I have aquired and hopefully better skill Thanks, let me know if you have any more questions.
