Background - I've got an Alesis Multimix 16 USB 2.0. I plug everything into it as a convenience (NTK vocal mic/SM57 guitar mic/Yamaha keyboard + Drum Machine) I even managed to set up a compressor through the Aux send for the vocal mic (I used to do using an insert, miss that insert...).

I use this setup for regular practice - so "live" situation in my basement. As you would expect I found the NTK was very sensitive and would feedback. To compensate I cranked the mids and highs down. My prevous mixer - Alesis Studio 24 - had a nice mid sweep that pinpointed the feedback, but my current Alesis requires a big cut on the highs and mids to combat feedback. It sounds pretty good though - kinda beefy and you could hear yourself sing. I play at reasonable volumes with my amp so it's loud enough for me.

So.....today I pulled out my I-ONIX U42S and tried that with my live practice. It has no EQ or Compressor just a microphone gain in, a mix/monitor level, and an ouput level.
Result - highs were much more noticeable of course, bright but not harsh. EQ on the line in channel on the Alesis was flat - so no rolling massive amounts of highs and mids off. I did have to watch levels for feedback but managed to get what appeared to be a decent amount of volume without eq'ing for feedback. I did get the occasional ring when I sang too close and a bit from the drum machine coming from the floor monitors.

So....the NTK has some pretty clean preamps (NTK has it's own power supply). No real color per se, and very transparent. I'm surprised as to why the feedback was prevalent when micing through the Alesis preamps but not through the Lexicon.
