Hi, I was thinking about picking up a Lexicon MPX550 for home recording. I plan on plugging my mic and guitar into the Avalon AD2022, then from the AD2022 to the MPX550, then into the E-MU 1212m sound card.

Is the MPX550 a good choice for reverb in this case, and is my proposed plan on hooking things up sound like the best way to do things.

Or, should I find good software reverb for this purpose? Or, should I save more money to buy something better?

I will be recording vocals and acoustic guitar.

I personally would want to record dry and add the reverb later. Once you are commited to reverb in the recording process, then it's very tough to change later if you want less reverb. The Lexicon 550 has SPDIF I/O so you would be able to use it later iwhen mixing without having to worry about an extra DA/AD conversion.

I just posted a thread very similar to what you are thinking...SonicAlbert gave some VERY good advice...go for an MPX-1 or if budget is an issue in that range, its predecessor the LXP-15. Just got my LXP-15 last week, and after some tweaking, it is beautiful. Haven't heard MPX550 in all honesty so I am a bit biased, but the advice the Good Sonic gave me has proven to be worth every listen. Anyway, haven't heard MPX 550 but I'm sure they are good products, but went with Sonic's advice and would recommend the same. I am very happy my new unit. :)
Thanks again, Sonic,

I think the Rumour would be a better choice, it's a great reverb box. :)

Rick,

Your candidates for an effects unit in that price range are the two Lexicon units (MPX1 and MPX550), the Kurzweil Rumour and the TC Electronics M2000. You mentioned in another post that you want to the unit to serve double duty, in the studio and for live gigging. In the studio, you don't want to use it when tracking, but later when mixing. The SPDIF connection works here. For gigging, it will patch in through the effects loop of your PA mixer, using analog connections.

You might want to compare features of the various units.

The only one of those four units that I *haven't* owned is the MPX-550. Of them, the Rumour stands out, with the MPX-1 not far behind (in my opinion).

The M2000 is good, but less versatile than the others. I also feel that the M-One XL sounds as good as the M2000, if not better in some respects, and is less expensive. However, I'd take the Kurzweil Rumour any day over the M2000.

new lex gear

Lexicon is releasing a new piece of gear that you should consider as well:

http://www.lexiconpro.com/mx200/index.asp

It's an entry level unit but it has USB, which would be awesome for DAW; would kill just about any plug-in verb; and free up some processing power to boot...

What was the verdict on the Yamaha REV500? Worth looking at or no?
The new Lexi on rezN8's link seems to be geared toward the budget-minded DAW operation. I wonder how it sounds.

Damn, I think I f****'d up in buying the LXP-15 then. Well, after a second listen, maybe not! :)

I personally really don't think you did. Especially once you get the mod done, if you decide to that. I've not heard it, but Jim Williams has done great things for whatever I brought in to him.

There's always going to be another piece of gear out there that someone says is great, you just can't think that that somehow invalidates what you've decided to bring into your studio. That LXP-15 is a solid piece of gear that you can keep around for years as your studio grows around it.

I also have the LXP-15 mkII -- it's very good as well!

sorry to revive this, but now I have the LXP-15II...new set of presets and MUCH quicker dial response in the "preset" mode. NICE!! Still would love to hear an MPX 500 or 500, just to compare. :)
