I have tried to connect a lexicon mpx100 RCA connector s/pdif ouput to the s/pdif input on the m-audio fast track without success.

The lexicon has a sample rate of 44.1khz and 20bits A/D where as the m-audio has a rate of 44.1khz but only a choice of 16 or 24 bit sample depth - does that mean they are incompatible and will never work together/

I cannot say for sure but since the vast majority of S/PDIF inputs on AI's, PCI cards and other gear cope with 16 and 24 bit sources it beggars belief that the Lexicon would not work.
In fact I do remember running a Philips Digital cassette recorder into a 2496 and the former was 18bits!

Gotta work, surely?

Dave.

Thanks for replying

You didn't mention if there's anything is going into the Lex

Hi
Well the new digital cable did not work, so I am still at a loss to know why
BTW I'm recording an electric guitar and the other 1/4 jacks inputs work but are a tad noisy - I want to us the s/pdif to avoid this and also to avoid unplugging when i want to use the power-amp input

Got it!

The attached clearly shows that S/PDIF should run a 20 bit stream and at any sample rate up to 48kHz.

Must be some other problem.

Dave.

I have set up the m-audio interface to accept s/pdif as in arcaxis's post but at 44.1khz

The signal path is a follows:
Strat > pedal board > stereo tube pre-amplifier > Lexicon mpx 100 dual channel > m-audio fast track pro

As I mentioned before the analogue channel works between the lexicon and m-audio but i cannot connect using the RCA s/pdif output

Back a bunch of years ago I couldn't get a Roland MMP-2 (mic pre) to talk S/PDIF with an M-Audio 2496 PCI card. Yet my Lexicon MPX-1 would work with the 2496 card fine and I could daisy chain the MMP-2 through the MPX-1 to the 2496 and use it that way. Some things just are meant to be sometimes, but that MXP100 should work I would think.

I'm assuming you don't get that "connected" indication in the panel(?)

Have you tried different sequences of powering things up?

Yes, the m-audio panel indicates that it is connected but i cannot hear anything
Update:
Strangely now if i attempt to record in Audition I can see the waveform whilst recording but cannot hear the output yet I can on playback

Just another update
I have just updated the software to the latest 6.1.10 - i run vista 64 OS and i wasn't quite sure if it would work but it seems to.
There is a different look to the user interface and the firmware was updated during installation.
It now tells me that it is connected but now also streaming, however i still have the same problem that i cannot monitor the s/pdif input
whilst recording and although there is a stereo output it will only record a choice of either left or right channel. On playback I can hear the recording.
