Levels too low

I'm having problems with my recording levels. I do my recording all on the computer, using "Digital Orchestrator" as my midi sync, "Sureal" as my Synth, Cool edit "2000" for Audio effects/Noise reduction/and WAV layering, and a "Monster" sound card. I set all volumes to max and I still don't get a loud enough volume. I'm thinking that I need to put some compression, or maybe it has to do with the sound card. If there is any one who can help, I would appreciate it so much.

I can't help you much myself; I'm not much into computer recording. I'm pretty positive compression won't help-out when dealing with this type of problem though. Someone's bound to help you out around here if you're patient enough.

But what caught my eye though, was that I saw you're in Oxnard. I grew-up in Ventura and went to school in Oxnard on C Street.

Anyway... Welcome.

I think what you need to do is normalise the digital recordings.

Normalising just integrates the whole waveform up so that the highest peaks are at 0dB. I think Cool Edit will normalize - in '96 there's a little icon on the toolbar.

If you normalise the signals and it's still to quiet, it might be because there are transients which are very loud compared to the main part of the waveform - in this case you might have to consider compression.

Hope that helps,

matt
