Over on another station in a similar thread I asked-
How many DAW/recording apps don't offer metering in RMS + PEAK ?
Only had a few answer- "most (many?) don't. This seems odd in that I came up in Cake and even back in 'pro audio 8 if I recall had it.
Anywho- That would be a shame 'cause so much of the meter/level fungfoo-sion is easily sorted out with a meter that does.
You set your record level -on most stuff, so the body of the sig hovers around in the -20 -18 range, the peak' read is there to make sure you're not hitting too high on the stray stuff.
On drums there ain't much 'body to it so you rely more on the peak indicator landing several or at least a few below full scale.
In mixers and preamps it's sort of the same. The body of the sig hangs out around unity/average, the peak meter says you're out of head room.
-The digital side (converters) were modeled from the same analog norms for level.
