When I am tracking in cooledit... what is a good level to watch for... on the meter? I have been tracking at about -6. Is this too high?

no, that's fine. as long as your choons are not suddently going eccessively violently mad in sonic rage...

You know - 'choons' - bits of music, often with words, played or sung. It's an alternate spelling. Like 'choob of toothpaste'.

demensia - I use mild compression when I'm tracking acoustic guitar or vocals, and a bit more when tracking bass. I try to aim at about -3 for peaks, which means it's usually hitting somewhere between -12 and -6.

I used to think that if it clipped just a tiny bit, then I could get away with it, but I've come to trust Cool Edit's meter (well, actually I guess it's Cool Edit + my soundcard) completely. Once into the red, and I dump that take.
