I would like to hear some good songs recorded on what we gear junkies refer to as "crap" gear

so, if you are using radio shack stuff, or your sblive, or behringer gear and still making good music, power to you, I would like to hear it.

Music recorded with expensive gear need not apply. eg if you used a condenser and it cost more than $200 then you are immediately disqualiffied

In a similar vein, I was thinking of contest of sorts where contestants can track a tune with nothing more that a SoundBlaster and a computer mic.
Back to your post, let me dig through the landfill and see if I have any of the lost years lurking about still.

I use a US122 ($200) and a Rode NT3 (on sale $99), a Digitech RP50 ($60). I got a Line 6 Spider II 15 ($160) for Christmas so it's on a couple of the newer ones. I've got Event PS6 monitors, $225 on ebay.

Do I qualify?

APL,

You qualify. The monitors are pushing it , but you definitely qualify. Now, kindly post you most catchy song made with this setup.

Track Rat,
I was thinking about a contest where all the recording equipment cost less than $1000. Ie mics, pres, monitors, mixers, soundcard. OF course, the computer and software can cost anything but the cheaper the better. Maybe we should set up something like that

Ooooooooh. I have some old, old recordings I can post.

Would a setup like..
(3)SM57 }
(1)D112 } Behringer MX2004A > Terratec Phase 88
(1)AT Kick/Tom mic }
(2)Oktava MC012 }

..be cool? My monitors are KRK Rokit8's, but that shouldn't count. :p

I have old stuff that was done with Nady drum mics through a Nady mixer into an SB Live! that I can post. Actually, most of it was done through my old onboard soundcard. It's got lots of hiss. It was done in Cool Edit Pro. Mixed on "AirWave" speakers. Ha.

EDIT: Here we go.

My friend, Mike Coonan, recorded this for his girlfriend a few years ago. It was done through the Nady board and mics. I think there may have been a 57 in there too. Ignore the one harmony. Heh.

He played all of the instruments.

This is a band from around here. They're called bornuponatree. They're a 3-piece progressive metal band, I guess. The part with no guitar doesn't have the solo recorded yet. This was done through the Behringer and stuff. They don't have a vocalist either.

This is my band, The Premier. This is one of our older songs that we recorded last year for a 3-song sampler. This vocalist is no longer in the band.. because he sucked. Well, his vocal lines and lyrics sucked and he wouldn't change for us. He got the boot. I'll be posting the new version of this band soon. We're working on five new songs.

Enjoy!

Well, I guess I am somewhat proud of the fact that I have never paid more than $200 for any gear in my so-called studio. I still have a lot to learn in the tracking/mixing department, but I'll post a song here for review.

The song is called "I don't want to know." It's just a rough mix, as I still have some tracking to do (and some noise-gating). Of course, any comments on the mix are appreciated.

FYI, the acoustic strumming pattern is loosely based on a Pernice Brothers song.

Well, scrubs, it sounds good on my system. Good songwriting, good muscianship, good recording.

Well done!

Wow, you're quite the little noodler there, apl! :)

Definitely a Neil Young groove. Intelligent lyrics and a very classic sound. Keep it up!

There ain't a font a big enough to express my appreciation for your kind words!

I'll take the challenge!!! (As soon as my PC starts working)

My gear is listed here. You pick the gear and I'll make a song with it as soon as I can get my PC onside. The Delta is non-negotiable ... enabling my onboard sound card would kill my PC for sure!!

Hey, I've got an MG 10/2 as well! I asked for it my 9/27/2004 b-day so I could mix my guitar and the song my teacher was wanting me to learn. I think it's the cat's meow. My next choice started with a B, and I just couldn't go there...

Haha! I just sold my B*hringer to a friend and actually feel a little guilty ... he also bought my AKG C1000S!!

Hey,

I listened to how do I rate. Good effort. It has that heartfelt feel that so many high budget recordings lack.

Thank you! It's for my wife. The first time I shared the lyrics with her I choked up and couldn't finish. So it's definitely heartfelt! :cool:

geet73, you are truly stretching the definition of crap gear with your mc012 and krk and AT and what not, but I gave your band's tune a listen. Definitely very nicely recorded. And a nice song too. I really like the playing. The vocalist was not bad on that song at all.

I listened to a bit of the other two pieces and they have the same clear quality to them. Good job.

Scrubs,
You did not list your gear so I am suspicious, but I like what I am hearing. THis is the type of music I love. SLightly melancholy, very melodic. Good music is good regardless of gear. Great job my friend.
