o.k....so now i'm up and running with the akai dps16. it in fact DOES have 16 individual channels of EQ, which can be run simultaneously and is purty darned cool....at any rate, i've come to the dramatic conclusion that a good pair of monitors are an absolute necessity for proper mixing.

OH YEAH? you might say...how did you ever come to that conclusion, drdrew? you must be some sort of genius!!! here we all have been mixing on headphones where everything sounds great and than playing our mixes on stereos where they sound like crap! Thank you, drdrew, thank you for teaching us that monitors are important!

no problemo. so, i go to ebay, where the devil lives, and makes me use my credit card.

i'm looking at event 20/20's...alesis M1's...and them thar KRK V8 thingies.... am i going in the right direction? I'd rather go for a powered monitor, and skip the amp if possible.

I know this is probably going to get a "matter of taste" type answer, but, i'd sure like to hear some opinions anyway. humor me. or not. just remember that we are all at different levels of experience here, so that's my excuse for my dumb questions.....

oh, one more thing. i read somewheres that buying a used condenser mike is a bad idea....due to fragility? true?

cause i'd sure rather pay the used price!

thank you for your patronage of my post, we've enjoyed your visit, please come again...

I think the general consensus is the Event 20/20s are very nice; Alesis I've heard both good and bad about. I also like the Tannoy Actives in that price range. It's my opinion that if you can pay to get powered monitors, why bother with passive at this level. I don't know if somewhere down the line there are some high level passive and matching amp combos for thousands of dollars that are the ultimate setup, but I haven't seen them in a studio if that's the case.

It's not like we're a bunch of Audiophiles around here though.... at least smellyfuzz said so. :)

RK &RL

I spent an hour or so listening to the same 2 CD's through the Powered Event's(20/20bas)and the Tria's and the KRK V8's a little while back and Subjective as the following may be,I preferred the KRK's in terms of accuracy of reproduction.I found also that the high end was very pleasant to the ear over the time I spent with them. They reminded me of a pair of British B&W floor standing speakers I had several years(and moves)ago.Very clean and airy. The Events were good too, though, and they do cost less(now). At the time I did this listening, the V*'s were going for like $999 for the pair, maybe cheaper now.BTW,Recording Mag did a speaker shootout maybe 9 mos. ago and they liked the KRK's as well over the rest.Cheers!

Read.. "Advice Needed on Studio Monitors" by bcnx.
Event Tria's are kick-ass for only $499 right now!
Check out the Musicians Friend catalogue, and get ready to put some skid marks on the Visa card. :)

I bought a pair of Mackie HR824's a few months back ($995 for the pair, new) and I really like them. They have a really flat response, full but tight bottom end and a crystal clear top end. They also have a lot of power (150w to the 8" and 100w to the tweet). That comes in handy when your speed metal client demands to hear his mix LOUD.
PS You probably won't find a pair as cheap as I did.
I think most places are asking $1200 - $1300 a pair.

I don't see any problem buying monitors from ebay, although I would recommend that you purchase a condensor mic new.
It is too fragile an item to forgo a warranty on..
When you are ready to buy a condensor, let me know, I might be able to help you.

i'm ready dougie....

whad'ya got? i was thinking about an NT-2
