I would love some info, opinions, & advice on how to use s/PDIF.

I have an Audiophile 24/96. How or why would I use S/PDIF ?

What other devices would I buy to somehow expand my setup for S/PDIF.

Thanks,

Sean

S/PDIF is a digital audio interface that can come in the form of either an optical or coaxial cable. You would need a device with S/PDIF outputs in order to make use of it and record.

Any digital device is *capable* of SPDIF or any other digital format. Whether the manufacturer decides to include the option is another story.

The POD Pro has SPDIF, and I think the J-Station does as well. The benefits there of course would be one less D/A conversion, which may or may not sound better depending on how they've tweeked the devices (my gut tells me they'd sound a little better, hopefully less noisy).

Outboard A/D converters are another great candidate for SPDIF. Standalone digital recorders (like minidisc) would be another.

Basically, anything that has to convert a signal to digital to muck with it *could* have an SPDIF option.
