Velvet Elvis

Ahh humma humma humma
Hey all...

I long time ago I posted a song in progress called "Over Myself"...

We just recently finished up the vocals on the tune (last Saturday)...

I'd really like to know what everyone thinks.

Take a listen at:

For kicks... here is the tune from when our keyboard player and I originally sketched it out... its pretty funny to listen to the "idea" versus the "finished product"

Thanks,
Velvet Elvis

I really like it Velvet, please tell us everything you used to record it and I'd really like to know your guitar gear. I really like the 'smooth' sound of the vocals and harmonies. Overall it's pretty impressive, i'm new to home recording so I don't have the ears to fully critique it yet but i'm sure others will have something to say.

Peter,

Thanks for the comments.

You might be surprised, but about 50% of the guitars were done through a Digitech Genesis 3. The others were done with a Vox AC-15 mic'd with an SM-57. Either a Les Paul Custom or a Tonesmith (custom made from Minnesota) were used on the tracks.

The vocal chain was Studio Projects C3 into a Presonus VXP then direct to tape.

Recording decks were old black face ADATs.

Mixed through a Mackie 24x8

velveteen: Yeah this was pretty good. The vocals sound better when they come up front at 1:13. Everything before that needs to come up a few notches. You have a good voice let's hear it doodles.

Now this isn't particularly my style of music mind you, but this definitely had that "modern rock radio" feel to it, 'cept it's too damn long. I would personally start wrapping it up at the 4 minute mark. The "chorus" thing that kicks in at 4:30 is unneccesary IMHO. Really the intro thing I would shorten a bit.

Really good pop sensibility to this song. Good job.

Rats,

Thanks for the comments...

That's actually another member of the band singing :) I did the tracking and the harmonies...

Yeah... the song is a little long... but its a CD cut, so we thought it would be ok.

Its funny that you say that vocals got louder... they are actually the same volume all the way through the song...

Ya know what... I think its using the wrong LINK!!! When I first posted the message... I posted the wrong link (a different song)... I then fixed it, but for some reason it reset itself...
btw - the "chorus thing" in that song you heard is going to be a solo :) THAT song isn't done yet :)

Take another listen if you would... it should be the one at THIS LINK

Let me change it.

Yeah I was apparently listening to another song. That one was close to six minutes long. This one is a faster one clocking in at 3:13.

Yeah. I don't think I care for this one as much as the first one. The weird robotic vocal thingy at 2:02 IMHO is way too overused and passe. But again I can't let the fact that I don't personally care for this type of music obscure the fact that it does have that pop sensibility and could certainly sell records. The overall recording sounded really good.

rats,

Yeah... we struggled with whether or not to put that chunk in the middle... and basically "defaulted" to it at least for now because we didn't have any better ideas for the day.

That's interesting that you liked the "Falling" song over the faster one... usually we get the exact opposite.

My chance to be Cher

For that electronic sounding vocal near the end of the song...

It seemed like a good way to fill in how empty that break was, with the electronic sound and the delays, without having to add a instrument solo of some kind.

Hey! It was my chance to compete with Cher!!! ...do you believe in life after love...

(For those who didn't catch on... unconfused1 is a member of the band and happens to be the one singing on that particular cut)

Wow, VE -- this is as good as anything I've heard in our area, recording-wise and pop songwriting-wise! Great tones on everything, clean tracks, very full sounding production without too many tracks/instruments. Great job filling up the mix.

Are you guys playing out around here? And more importantly, are you taking clients in your studio? ;) We'd eventually like to do real drums on our stuff and I really dig the sound you're getting from both an engineer and production standpoint... Awesome work!

P.S. Gonna have to agree with rats on the synth vocal though. Would've been cool enough to just drop it to a lo-fi/ambient sound without gettin all "I've Got U, Babe" on us... :D

Maryslittlesecret...

Bwahahahahahaha... ok ok ok ... we will do something to that middle section :)

Thanks for the comments on the production and engineering.

I'm not really taking clients at this time, because I'm working out of my house (all of this was recorded either at my house or my parent's house... funny eh?)

you can see the start of my studio page at http://www.easternskyline.com

We haven't been playing around Cedar Rapids really at all... been too busy recording and doing family stuff.

I really appreciate your vote of confidence on my engineering and production... that's cool.

Awe... and I was hoping Frampton came alive for that part... Oh well, Great tune though! ;)

man ,

I'm hearing a lot of awesome songs in the clinic these days.

These is nice.
from your topic, it does not sound like a cover, but it sounds familiar. If its not, it deserves to be on any top forty list.

nice production.

the only thing is that it sounds a bit blurred compared to pro stuff. This does not stop it from rocking though.

Funk on!

Good job VE. I really liked the drums in the beginning and the way that the instruments were able to sit in their own space without stepping on the vocals.

This reminds me of a theme song for a TV show. I don't remember the name of the show.

I think it sounds pretty decent, but without looking at the meters (mind you now...honest!), it sounds like one of those mixes where the meters don't budge...but are just stuck on one reading from beginning to end. The instruments however have a decent separation in spite of that. I like the nice "ringy" snare sound for this song, and you can actually hear the vocals! Personally, I like the autotune effect...sounds good here. Also, I suppose acceptably...the bass kinda melds in with the guitars....is that ok with you? However, at the autotune break, the bass is too undefined for my liking. The volume, abrupt change at the end is kinda drastic, and the effect sounds more like a mistake than being musical, but I think is *technically* mixed ok...but it hit me weird...and I played that part a couple times to try and get used to it. Alot of hiss at the end too. ..can you clean that up?...it's almost TOO much with only the repeat echos going on.

oh yeah...for some reason, I seem to miss a solo going on somewhere...maybe it flashed by me when typing, but a cool synth solo that gets your attention might have been nice somewhere.

good song...and that's important as we all know.

Cyan:

No this is not a cover tune... its an original from an album that my band will hopefully be releasing this summer... we of course were very much trying to target the top 40 pop/rock/alternative scene.

The "blurring" may be that this is only on 16-bit ADATs :) dunno.

Sonic:

Thanks... I liked the drums on this one too... I'm not happy with the tom sounds yet, but I ran out of gates so I had to leave them a little quiet in the mix.

Mixmkr:

Yeah... this song is pretty flat on the meters... we have others with much more dynamic range... but the intent of this one was just to be a rock song... nothing else really. Glad you liked the autotune effect :) You are one of the few.

I will see what I can do with the bass... there are two bass tracks (one direct and one mic'd).... I need a touch more of the direct one during the "song" portion and a touch more of the mic'd one during the bridge... that should help the definition a little.

The noise is from putting it into my computer... I haven't found my problem yet, but I've got SIGNIFICANT line noise on the input to the computer. I've got a SPDIF input... I'll try dumping it that way through my DAT deck and see if its cleaner. It might also help the definition a little.

We are going to add something synth wise... probably not a solo... but just some fill for the break and such... I'll repost when we do.

Thanks all...

Let me ask this... how does this hold compared to what you hear on the radio nowadays?

Velvet

Good tune with e GREAT hook.Had me singing 'overmyself' at the first chorus.

This is Top 40 material for sure.Clocking at only 3 minutes or so I found myself wanting more.(but thats the idea right?)Keep 'em coming back for more.

I could see this getting placed on a movie soundtrack also. It's just too darn catchy not to be.

Good luck with whatever you are 'able' to do with it.

rbw -

Thanks for the comments... we are to be releasing an album with a small record company called True Tunes Records... when we signed, they had only heard our older material, so they really haven't heard ANYTHING from the new project.

We are hoping they will be pleased with our efforts.

Velvet

nice song....sounds VERY radioish...compressed to death maybe, but I like it.....easy to get right into this song. I would probably fall on the side of not liking the auto tune, which is suprising because I tend to drown my own vocals in effects...I just don't think it sounds good HERE...

Bottom line, good song..I played it 4 times:)

I wish you luck with it...

Sabbath...

Yeah I tend to do a lot of compressing in my computer when I make the waves to post... dunno just like what it sounds like I guess.

I think the general consensus is that we will lose the autotune effect in the bridge... I'm thinking now of going for a "old phonograph" sort of effect with the scratchy records sounds and all... dunno until I try it.

Glad you liked the tune.
