oh okay - you must have mentioned it to the wife?
- dear I'm jonesing for a silverburst.
- not before I get a new diamond ring/vacation (insert wife's jonesing here) !!!!
- just kidding dear!!!

I want something with neck and body binding. I'm looking used now.

If you're near OH or WI there should be a ton of them for sale after those governors fire all the state employees and they need to buy groceries.

I don't - fortunately. But the writing is on the wall, isn't it?

Be careful buying used with all the counterfeit Chinese Gibson guitars floating around (Fenders too). I've seen more than a few fakes on the PHX craigslist over the last 6 months....some self disclosed as to what they really were, and some that were outed by other craigslisters.

What you think you are buying and what you get could be two entirely different things.

Buyer beware unfortunately.

If you want to stick with a LP.....there are plenty of used LPs out there. Just make sure you get a S/N from the seller, and check it at Gibson's web site.

You wanna disclose yer budget? Brandy-new silver-burst studios are $1400 at MF. You can get some damn nice player Standards for that. 80s-90s. If you are patient or have a few more bucks you might snag a Custom. I got my 81 Custom for $1500 about six years ago now. E-bay, fairly local, didn't sell at $1800. The economy is the shits and lots of nice stuff is coming up at very reasonable prices. I've gotten some very fair deals in the last couple years. Just gotta do some due diligence. Fake LPs are pretty easy to spot in person if you have any experience with them at all. If not bring a friend who does.

Good luck, man. Get a good un.

Hey, Creep - I know it don't say Gibson on the headstock but if you know anything about these this could be a very good deal.

1989 ORVILLE LES PAUL CUSTOM BLACK BEAUTY JAPAN MIJ - eBay (item 180627221773 end time Feb-26-11 16:10:45 PST)

Let me know if you are interested and I'll stay out of the bidding. Otherwise I may go after it.

'Preciate it, Lou. I will never again buy a musical instrument through eBay.

Anyway, I'll keep my eyes open on craigslist.

Bad experience? Do you have a cautionary tale?

I bought my Yamaha off Fleabay. There was little choice, they are hard to find. The LP Custom was an auction that failed to meet reserve and the guy that had it was an hour away. We exchanged email addys and did the deal face to face cash in hand. I'm not thrilled with buying an instrument I can't hold and play first but if it's uncommon enough it's pretty much the only option.

The Orville Custom went for $801. That is a very good price.

I'm no ebay fan, but I have had good luck buying guitars there:

Epi Les Paul, got a great price and after I sold off the coffin-shaped case and 15-watt practice amp that came with it, it was a SWEET deal, and a very nice guitar.

Fender American Standard Strat. Did get to play this one before I paid; seller met me half way between Chattanooga and Atlanta. Paid about $200 below going price at the time.

The very FIRST thing I ever bought on ebay was an acoustic guitar. It was almost a POS, but I had fun and learned a lot making it better, and sold it for more than I paid.
