Some of you know I've been looking at Epi Les Pauls, but I found a real Les Paul, but its the Menace version, all black without any kind ofbindings or cosmetic niceties except for some weird tribal grooving and a brass fist inlay at the 5th fret, for $625 locally with hard shell case and its in perfect shape. From the appearance of the frets, its hardly been played and they seem like a pretty new line anyway.

It didnt play quite right so I snuck it in the back and dropped the action down on it and then it played much better. I figure a real Les Paul, even an unusual and toned down version of it, will be better than the Epi. Decent pickups and tuners. I think I may buy it tomorrow.

It has brass poles on the pickups though, they are calling them "smokey coil" 490r's. Wonder if they actually sound any different than regualr 490R's.

Whats the word on these?

Don't overestimate Gibby's American quality...I'm not a hater of Gibby but one needs to be realistic about their quality. Make sure you remove the neck pickup and check the tenon and stuff like that. I bought a MIK lester and it just sings and I can't list how many things I love about it. It has some things about it that are not too impressive like the nut and the fret job but these are easily corrected. If I were to buy an American LP I would make darn sure that it was a perfect frak'n guitar.

I dont even know what a tenon is or why I'm checking it.
What is an MIK Lester? And why would I want something that needed an immediate fret job? Seems counter productive. I'll do a search though.

I've played Epis that were better than some of the Gibsons, and for half the price.

But if it plays well for you and you're happy with it, then buy it.
