That was a very cool video...

It reminded me of looking at Guitar Player mags 25+ years ago and thinking about why I love playing 'yazz'

Thanks

great.. man what a fucking player TF is he has to be my all time fave jazz player on guitar

Now....THAT is how I define "playing outside"!!

(and I dont mean outdoors!)

Tal made it look so easy. Looks are deceptive.
Besides listening to him play, I used to like to watch piano players sweat bullets when he played. Funny because it usually is the other way around when you have a prima donna pianist. I miss that guy.

Lenny hit the nail on the head about the piano.

A friend of mine from eastern ohio (borderline appalachia) told me that Lenny Breau used to come to his house all the time and jam with his dad. His dad is one of those country jazz players. Kinda Chet Atkins-ish. My friend says that lenny's wife or ex-wife or girlfriend is responsible for his death. I always thought it was weird that he would go to this cabin in podunk to jam, but after seeing the video, it's just his modus operandi, I guess.

I just tried to call that old friend, Peach at the cell number I had. His ex-wife answered and said that he gave the phone to his son for secure communications, I guess. And she didn't have his new number. If she was nice, she'd check the incoming calls to that phone and give me the number, huh? I hate it when old friends drop off the radar. Damn!

Wow! I didn't know Ray Couture was famous. He's just an old guy that I know that sells carports in Belmont, OH. I don't think he's dead, though. I haven't seen him in years.

Ray Couture - 1999
(AKA: “Abner Doolittle”)

Ray was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine. At the age of 15, Ray and his cousins, Champ and Rich Bilodeau, formed a country band called Champ-Rich & Pan. They were one of the first groups to broadcast on WCOU in Lewiston.

In 1938, Ray joined the Lone Pine Mountaineer Show. The group broadcaster nightly shows in the area until moving to Bangor where Lone Pine was well known. They broadcasted daily on WABI and played many concerts in the area. About this time Ray joined Gene Hooper and played for several years in Bangor, Lewiston, Aroostook County and Eastern Canada.

In 1953, Ray went to Wheeling with Lone Pine and Betty Cody. When Lone Pine left the show in Wheeling, Ray stayed on and spent 45 years working on the Wheeling Jamboree, originally as a guitar player and later as Director of the Staff Band.

Ray has recorded with Lone Pine & Betty Cody, Gene Hooper, Big Slim, The Lone Cowboy, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Chet Atkins, Grady martin and played back up for many well known artists.

The late Lenny Breau, one of the greatest guitar players in the world, was taught by Ray Couture when Lenny was a young boy.

Ray is now retired and spends his musical time writing sounds with more than 500 to his credit, including “Good-Bye and So Long To You”, “Prince Edward Island Is Heaven To Me”, and “The Tom-Tom Yodel”. Doc Williams recently recorded 12 of Ray’s original songs.

Yeah man. I was lucky enough to be sitting no more than two feel away from Mr Farlow at a gig many years ago in my formative years as a guitarist.

Funny how seeing one gig like that can influence the way you play for life! I was lucky enough to have a guitar teacher that could show me some of those 'piano' style voicings too :)

cephus - that's amazing that you know the guy who taught Lenny in his early years. It makes sense, 'cos he was the son of the couple that made up 'Lone Pine' :)

I think Lenny's style is my favorite - when you get to the calibur of guitarist of these guys I think there is no 'best'.

Kenny Burrell wasn't half bad either ;)

I saw Kenny at the Villiage Vangarde in NYC. I don't think any of his recorded material comes close to showing how great he really is. I'm not sure but I think Kenny has a Phd. in music.

Tal had huge hands. His axe was much to big for me to play and it looks like a pony guitar when he played it!
