Length of recording

Marking my territory
I often use a drum machine (as I can't play drums) when I record. Sometimes, I plan out the length of the song in terms of bars and I lay the drum track down and start recording the music over the drum track. The singer comes along and we decide, for example, to shorten the song using the existing music that I have laid down but fade the music out. We do this because sometimes, the mood in the music was just right or the singer is really on form and we don't want to re-record and lose the mood.

Anyway, I then mix this down and fade out - before the end of the drum track. When I convert this to a WAV file and export it and play it - the song plays well and fades out, but the WAV file still "plays" to the end of the drum track if you see what I mean. So the actual song is, let's say, 3mins20secs long but the WAV files plays for 4mins15secs even though you can't hear anything because it was mixed down.

How do I get around this? Is there someway on the MR8 that I can delete the end of the drum track and shorten the actual file?

Thanks
Nick

You can set Start/Stop points in your song and then use those as the guides when you convert to your stereo wave...
Going off memory since my MR8 is at home, but when you select 'Convert to Wave', the first option is going to be Recording Start --> Recording Finish, but if you toggle to the next option it will be A --> B...
Just be sure to set your B marker where you would like the wave file to end and that's all that will be created...

I'm sure a more detailed (and less goofy) set of instructions is in the manual

Hope this helps!

I don't know what an MR8 is, but I suppose it is a digital recorder.

Take the .wav or MP3 file to your computer. Load a program named "Audacity" (free on the net) and do your editing there.

It's Fostex's little red machine... digital 8 tracker. Really nice.

Wilko: read editing your tracks in the manual. In the menu, there is an option to delete whole/part of your tracks. You can use this to delete the remaining secions of your tracks after the fade.

fade out

Set your A/B points on the drum track and use the delete or erase part options to eliminated unwanted audio before converting to wav. Pj

thats it

if you dont want to go the the pc, pjh has the right answer....
